what so the point of the olympics is for some team to go and 'compete' and get blatantly hammered by one of the only two 'good' teams in the tournament? weird...

OF COURSE it's for entertainment wtf planet do you live on? Oh wait it's to show like the communion of mankind and promote peace and understanding is it? if not for entertainment why do they hype it up so much?

b.u.l.l.s.h.i.t.

women's hockey isn't interesting not becasue it's women playing (Eifa) but because it's so obvious who's gonna win pretty much all the way to the final.

It's like when softball was in the regular olympics just so the USA could hammer everyone and say they're world champions at something else (yeah I know Japan one the gold once). If you watched those women's games you could see the teams were hopelessly mismatched. It's not even the scoreline. It could be like 6-2 and still be a nailbaiting game with some errors and close finishes and whatever. But those women's hockey games...every time canada /USA get the puck it's like a power play, 5 vs. 2, they get the puck, they score, the other team gets the puck, loses it, oh look what a surprise the goalie's fallen over and canada have scored again. how interesting. not.

Well obviously with time and competition other teams will get better.  Plus, the only reason Canada destroyed them is that the goals for/against matter for moving on in the event of a tie.  If it hadnt been for that I'm sure they would have let up.

Plus, I dont see what the problem is with a team dominating.  Does that mean Michael Phelps shouldnt swim since hes better than everyone else?  This is a tournament to see who is the best in the world, and clearly Canada and the US are that (in womens hockey).

You could easily be talking about the USA - Switzerland match here. The mens match.
I see no difference.
Yet you don't think the same way about mens hockey, amirite?

Well duh. Of course! It's men who make the big hits, score unbelievebly amazing goals after well thought plays and put the score to 12-1 against Kazakhstan in the second period. Not women. Afterall they can't even tackle properly or shoot the puck since they're physically weak and all and should be cooking dinner to the men's team, and be ready to massage the masculine men after their gladiator efforts of 60min has ended for the night.

Pfft...

I 've been watching women's olympic and WC games since they've been on TV over here because it actually IS entertaining. Lots of goals and some nice plays, and genuine joy of success. Plus there's some hot players among them

yawn that was just an example. your assumption that when anyone ever vaguely mentions America in a less-than-positive light indicates 'anti-americanism' is wearing thin. Couldn't give a crap what you reckon I'm all about tbh.

Eifa wrote:

Oh purlease don't bother turning this into some 'ruisleipa is sexist AND anti-american' bollox. In the mens hockey there are plenty of teams that COULD win. USA, Canada, russia, finland, sweden, czech republic etc. Yeah there're still waste of space teams that are there just to fill up the numbers like switzerland or whatever who are are almost certain to get soundly beaten. Yes I think it's a waste of time them being there tbh.

For what it's worth, on principle, I think that women's hockey has more 'right' to be an olympic sport than men's hockey since afaik (and I could be wrong cos I'm no hockey fan in any case) there is only one women's ice hockey world championship and several men's championships of various sorts held annually around the world involving different countries. So yeah it's mbetter for the women's sport that they're in the olympics cos people normally don't see them play or really give a crap in general compared with the men's sport (same in football right? Not talking about me but in general). BUT in the women's tournament  held 12 times since 1990 in those tournaments the USA and Canada have ALWAYS come 1st or 2nd. Not very competitive, eh? At least in the men's tournaments the winning title is up for grabs a bit more.

For what it's worth I don't really like hockey and never watch it normally. I watch the olympics to see the best in the world comepte against each other, not two teams dominate everyone.

again, it's not about them being women. come on get off your high horses. it's just my opinion so I dunno what you're all getting so upset about. of course the women players are very good and a billion times better than I could ever be. A lot of men's hockey is shite too.

my simple point is this, again: IN MY OPINION for a sport to be entertaining to watch (and to play in) the game should be competitive, i.e. both teams should stand a chance of winning. When the same teams win again and again steamrolling the opposition IN MY OPINION it isn't interesting to watch. Yes games like USA vs Kazakhstan or whatever are boring to watch whether it's men or women, I couldn't care less what gender they are, a scoreline of 12-1 or so is boring unless you are from that winning country in which case it's a good chance to get a morale boost.

The fact there are 'hot players' has fuck all to do with anything and tbh is a pretty childish chauvinistic response. Ultra you like watching the women cos they're 'hot' and there's some 'nice plays' and 'lots of goals'. Well I like watching a competitive game of something. There's a difference. Watching England hammer ten goals past Malta in the football is shit as well. If you wanna see hot women there are plenty of places you can find pics and movies you know where the ladeez aren't wearing ice hockey equipment. I watch sport to see talented people playing sport, couldn't give a shite how 'hot' they are.

The fact that they could even afford to 'let up' is precisely the point. You wanna see players at the top of their game? So give them a damn competition ffs. It's a simple idea. If they come out, score goals at will and spend the whole game playing with their opponents, where's the fun in that? Would you rather see a 5-4 nailbiter or a 12-0 thrashing? I'd rather see the former.

As for Michael Phelps, he's a freak of nature He has also been beaten. Unlike Canada and the US in women's ice hockey championships.

Lots of goals isn't a good thing.

I got bored of watching the women's Canada VS Slovakia match because Canada scored so much..

Kind of takes the excitement out of it.

Also russia, its the same with every sport. Certain countries dominate and certain countries suck at the moment. Do you actually think Jamaica is going to win bobsled? nah, maybe we should just ban them for trying... I mean fuck, they aren't winning gold right now, so that means that they will never ever stand a chance of winning it. So we should just not allow anyone in that country to participate in that sport.

Its really the same with every sport, like Nic said.  You only notice it in hockey because its a 1 vs 1 sport.  If you took all the other sports and looked at say, snowboarding, I'd be willing to bet that 3-5 countries dominate it and then there are a whole bunch of countries that look pretty sucky compared to them.

why the heck should we ban them? talk about taking something to ridiculous extremes.

in the 2009 championships those placed 1st 2nd or 3rd in various events came from the following countries:

USA
Canada
Austria
France
Germany
Finland
Belgium
Norway
Switzerland
Russia
China
Australia
Poland
Japan

The main difference is hockey is a TEAM sport while snowboarding is individual. nothing to do with it being '1vs1' (I guess you mean one team vs one team? I've never seen a sport played with more than two teams at the same time).

I mean like 1 person/group vs 1 person/group.

If you had skiing with as 1v1 and you had no. 3 skier vs no. 48 skier it would seem lopsided as well.

I'm a bit confused. I dunno what that has to do with the original point about women's hockey being boring to watch in this olympics.

Because by your reasoning, if one team is better than the other by a large amount, than the sport should be out of the olympics. So if one skier comes in 10 seconds before the other, sking is boring and should not be in the olympics.

Trying to determine what "should be" entertaining for everyone is just lame. Just watch and comment on what interest you (or not).
Don't be so desperate for attention to think that you're lack of enjoyment actually matters to other people.

Nobody cares if you're bored or uninterested.

Boardercross is crap though. And after watching that chick fuck up an easy grab over the final kicker last winter Olympics, I'm not convinced they can snowboard. If she'd fucked up a rodeo or something I'd give them some credit, but a grab?
