The genre I admired the most

They can do the same to you = a challenge. You have to take cover.

Same thing no? Map knowledge, and twitch/aim.

I dont see the distinction for HC CoD4.

I play Hardcore mode because I get frustrated by the fact that I usually get the drop on someone only for them to somenow not fucking die despite getting shot a hundred times. Things like lag and framerate come more into play when you have twitch games where you need a headshot to drop someone. Fuck that.

Playing regular mode isn't actually more challenging, you get the gaydar, all that clutter on the screen, it's annoying.
