Hey all.
I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the new craze of celebrities bashing Canada (as a whole or the regions and people involved) because of the seal hunt.  Specifically, why they are speaking out or doing whatever it is they think they are entitled to get this hunt to stop, when there are other causes which, theoretically, warrant their attention more...like AIDS, drugs, murder, rape, kidnapping, etc. that affect human beings.
Or, why don't they defend other animals we (as human beings) slaughter like cattle or pigs so vehemently?

This is not a question of whether or not you support or are against killing seals for one reason or another, it's about why people who think they're someone that everyone should listen to get involved, when there are other causes for them to invest their time, money and opinions.

If you don't know about this, or just plain don't care, that's cool.

I don't mind animals being killed for food like cows or a nice minted sauce lamb chop but seals is tight and i suppose their cute.Like when they hunt the black rhino for the horn and don't eat it.Seems like a waste or life.

Those little seals are seriously cute, man.
There is something seriously wrong with you if you can just look into those big eyes and that cute little head and still whack away with a club.

Yes, I know seals are cute, I agree (they'll bite you if you're dumb enough to pat one, you know).
I'm wondering why celebrites are activists only for the cute animals.  Cows are killed at a rate higher than seals, why don't they boycott the country, or any other country,  for them?
These people get in the way of fishing boats and then sue them for getting run into or sunk or whatever.  People die for a gazillion reasons worldwide, but you rarely here any celebrites talking about that, unless it's Angelina Jolie adopting a country or the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation joining Amnesty International and making a commercial 20 years ago for starving kids.
Is this a media issue?  Does the press only publicize news about seals because it's happening within the country?
I read an article today about the baby in Italy that was killed with a shovel by his kidnappers because he wouldn't stop crying (the two kidnappers wiped out on a motorcycle with the baby between them).  The author was asking if anyone cared because it didn't happen here.  I digress, but you know what I mean.

edited for grammar cause I'm Canadian, eh...

coz the numbers of cows and pigs are a lot higher then seals... but if they overpopulate in the area, i would say go hunt em (thats what canadians do eh?) but if the numbers are average... dont hunt...

As long as the animals are not categorized as close to totally wanishing from earth in total - kill away.

That is if the hunt is legit and we make use of most of the animal - killing for a horn only and and to put something on your castlewall i`m against.

Allthough in my younger days i had a t-shirt stating "We killed and ate Flipper" in addition to a Norwegian flag.

I need to ask a dumb question.  Why are they killed, is it to eat the flesh etc or is it because of the fur?

Regardless of the answer, I think that as long as they aren't endangered then why not?  We are omnivores after all.

We have a big push in Aust. to save the whales that the Japanese hunt for "Scientific Purposes" but not too much is said about the culling of Kangaroos.  Bit hypocrytical to me.

Anyway, that's my 0.2 for today

Good point, they can kill them as long as it is for food or as long as they dont exterminate them like we in America did with the bizon. We almost killed all the bizons in 1800's lol.....there were only 1000 left in whole US

well, the difference beteween cows and baby seals is obviously the fact that cows are widely acepted among the western world as food supply and are breeded for exactly that purpose. The cows we kill today for their meat are not wild animals.

On the other hand, most westerners don't look at baby seals as resources for food or other skin, to us they are wild, but cute animals who look at us with those big childish eyes.

It is a cultural thing, nothing more. If you asked a canadian native or an inuit about this issue they'd probably tell you that seals are to them what cows/pigs are to us.

now, why would celebrities engage in anti-seal-clubbing movements ?

two reasons here for me:

1. they care about baby seals and don't want to see them murdered for their skin and they know that their struggle will raise public attention because after all, they are celebrities
2. well, they are celebrities, and as such love the cameras and media attention. Most celebs ( especially those who fear they are losing popularity ) will go at great lengths to get media attention. What is more inportant than becoming a celebrity ? Staying a celebrity....

I guess the reality is a mix between the two.

It isn't just for fun, but it's the equivalent to whaling.  If people have to do it then it should be done without wiping out the whole population.

Anyway, if you want to do it for fun, try this:
