Wow, kinda anachronous...
so you suggest buying every new OS Microsoft throws on the market ? Win2000 might not be the current MS OS of choice, but it still widely used among gamers and other computer users worldwide.

Hey Dackel; keep us informed about if it works, although I think that we need an installed downloader on our machines like the way we have to insert the BF CD in our Drive to play....

[Hope-Mode value="EA may modify the downloader for the BoosterPack; at last they will get more money for it"/]

Hey, FYI 2000 was not made to handle games.  It was designed from a business aspect.  I am suprised that you even got BF2 to run on it.  M$ 2K does not handle games that well anyways.  That is way EA said that it will only support XP.  (Correct me if I am wrong, but M$ does not even support any of their operating systems before 2000/XP.)

hello,

I have the same problem..
I like win2k and do not want to "up-"/downgrade to winxp

I will install a vmware.
I get a vmware with winxp from a friend.
After the download, i can delete the vmware-files

no offense, but I have been using Win2000 heavily for gaming ( Half Life², CS:Source, the complete Battlefield series ) for years now and I have never had any problems. And I am certainly not buying XP now, with Vista coming out.

It is true that XP is better at supporting all kinds of multimedia applications ( this would include games ), but that doesn't mean you cannot ( or should not ) code a game in such a way that XP and Win2000 are supported. Many other game companies do it, and I think it's a shame EA is fucking over Win2000 users.

I do hope the patch will address this, but I have my doubts...

Hey, remember, its all about the >>downloader-Software<< which doesnt work with 2K --- I bet the boosterPack itself can easily be installed on 2k because its a techn. part of BF-vanilla and BF has no prob with that "business system"

About win2000 in general: I've never seen a game or application (ok, the XP-firewall maybe) running on XP and making probs on 2K. Even 'xp-antispy' works!

The issue with skype these days made it clear that some companies can and do restrict their software for certain secret reasons. Maybe EA has no idea how to control the installations on 2k what seems to be easier on XP...

I misread the first post, I thought the person stated that they could not install the game.  Most XP application will work on 2000, since XP was built on the same kernal.  The reason that there is a Home and Pro version of XP is that the Home version's kernal has been changed to support more "home/small office" applications.  For example, on most home PCs you will not need as much network support as you do in a large office.  I know that at work, I run at least 12 items, at once, that use the network.  At home, I may run three or four programs that access a network at a time.

Hmm...
I thougt one of the major improvements of NT5.0 (aka Win2k) was the full support for Games and Multimedia Applications.
And the only application i know that doesnt run on 2K is Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5.
Even though the installer of BF2 states, that the game was not tested with 2K it runs perfectly on my machine. At least it does not run worse than on my friends machines, which run XP.
BTW. Money ist not the only reason for not buying XP.
I hate XP. I have to use it @ work and it really pisses my off! Day by Day.
So why should i consider buying and installing XP, if everything else works just perfectly???

i can relate to you guys.have xp pro but its not as stable as 2k.had to upgrade due to my career but miss 2k.cant see that ea will fix the compatility for ea downloader.its going to take some one to create an emulation program, because isnt compatability mode only backwards compatible?

will give my colleague the code and all stuff to download it for me and then i will see.

This new trend of messing with 2k users is really annoying...

I mean, hey I spend money for Win 2k and have the right to use it as long it is supported...

They did this with Age of Empires III, too. There are ways to install it and even patch it, but try to play on the ESO gaming network... It not only checks your version, it even checks your OS, WTF?

What is this??? Tell what OS you got and i tell you who you are or what???

Up until last summer, I was running 98 SP2 on my gaming system... it was stable, and supported all the games I was running (CS, BF1942, Need for Speed, etc)... The only reason I switched to XP with my new rig, was for the higher memory limit (4GB), and the reduced networking problems (my wife's laptop running XP didn't like connecting to a 98 printer for some reason).
If it wasn't for those two things though, I would still be running the older OS.. it was stable, so of course MS didn't support it. There was nothing left for them to fix.
XP however, just keep those updates coming... (hey, EA keeps doing updates too... how many developers does EA / Dice employ who used to be Microsoft Employees?)
And Vista will be two years old before I would even consider it... too many new variables to be stable until then. (read Tom's hardware article about HDCP and all current Video cards on the market for a horror story in the making)

I´ve just thought of suggest this way... But I´m not shure how the EA-Downloader will work (no xp on this). Is this like steam or could you download the stuff and place it whereever you want on your HD? Last will solve your problems.

Applications, and networks, not games.  NT is a network kernal and is not designed handle the resources needed to run games.  Hence the reason for XP Pro and Home edition.  M$ thought they would be better to start basing all of their systems on  the NT 5 kernal because it is more stable then the 3.0 kernal used in 9X series.  It also makes Windows more compatible with each other, and avoid the 3.X series issues that still effect Windows with the ME and 2K releases.

I think they should tottaly qiut making new maps and packs look at special forces everybody is playing the normal bf (atleast the most ppl). 1 thing they could do is bring in some gun upgrades.

No I don't mean new guns (altough one set would be nice ) but upgrades like slinecer for your guns  or bigger scope for your sniper you can earn this by getting 3000 points orso then you can get a new upgrade.

What you guys think of that?

I think it is waaay off topic. We are talking about Euro Force requiring Win XP.

Sorry, that is just wrong. XP home is just XP Pro with enough features disabled to make it unattractive to businesses with a Windows Domain Controller and centralized administration. You can find Microsoft's comparison table here. XP Home adds nothing, but it allows MS a lower price for home users while still hitting business users for nearly twice as much. I use Remote Desktop to login to my home computer from work, so I have XP Pro; otherwise I would run XP Home.

BTW, Microsoft in its infinite marketing wisdom will provide  five versions of Vista: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. Interesting info, and just a little off topic.

IMHO there is more than enough in XP to justify the upgrade from 2000. You can wait for Vista if you like, but Microsoft is always late, and you might want to wait while other unhappy customers debug the the new OS for Microsoft.

Of course, it still stinks that Euro Forces won't install for you, but you should expect more of that as 2000 gets older.

well, as dackel has suggested, I'll wait until EF "officially" comes out tomorrow. Then I'll check around the community if there is someone with the same problem and see wether they have a workaround.
Maybe it is possible to download the booster via a XP machine in my network and install it on my machine via a network drive.

yesterday i got the downloaded ef from my colleague.

It works.

First download and install the downloader as suggested in package.

then start the downloader on an xp machine.

after downloading the files an automatic install of ef will run (bf2 or not).

after this there is a folder containing various files and a setup.exe.

run setup and tata...

EF IS RUNNING.

don´t ask me too much questions, my colleague figured everything out and used a variety of my gamespy-ids and ea-accounts to finish all this.

have fun and we see us on the battlefield.

You can DL it with XP. Burn. Then install on win2k. Or so this guy at EA forums has claimed to have done.

This is GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As Staticblue mentioned, this guy in that forum did it like this:

"All sorted, I just let the EA downloader prepare the install files (unpack them) and put the prepared files onto a DVD and installed onto the machine upstairs [the win2k machine]."

That's what I'm doing next tomorrow!!

Thanx to Dackel & Staticblue
MJ

BTW: What that guy also said; I'm totally with him:

"Shame on you EA for being too bone idle to do more than a 'hack-job' on your "EA- downloader". Or is bill gates paying you a percentage for every copy of XP he shifts on to BF2 players who want to play Euroforce."

I can now confirm this works. I posted directions in another thread. I will leave it here for you all too.

Here's what I did.

Get a blank CD.

Get to a PC with XP and a CD burner.

Put the downloader on the XP PC and purchase and download the game. Be sure the gamespy account you set up in the downloader is the same as your MAIN account you play on. Seems that EF can only run on one account.

After it''s downloaded continue with the installation. Even if BF2 isn't on the PC. The first 2 steps of the installation are just unzipping.

The third step actually starts the install. Just continue then cancel when the install screen comes up.

Now go to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Downloader\cache\"Downloaderusername"

In there is a folder called. eagamesbf2-2006...... Burn that folder to a CD.

Take the CD home and install. There is a setup application in the folder to start the install. If all you usernames are straight you should be good to go.

"alright, I am good to go...."
