seems like a lot of wasted space that doesn't do much besides make the sig wider.

Its good design, but you have to much "White Space" this is the black area that has nothing on it. You should try moving the main focal point (picture) or adding something to the white space to draw the eye back to the center.

Yeah i aggrea, try maybe moving your name to sit vertically up and down the right border, reading from the bottom to the top, and also, make the BG not black so much, but a more native colour like the left.

no no, dont get rid of the black, make it the same colour as behind the dude, and move your name further to the right, to fill it up with at least something, cause its just an empty space, my example was to
