How does the story explain a civilian scientist turning into an unparalleled soldier?
It's because I'm controlling him.

He's supersmart and he has a supersuit.
He had no choice. After what happened at Black Mesa (the resonance cascade creating the portal to Xen) he was forced to use the HEV suit to defend himself. Gman must have seen it coming, and after HL1 took him into a status of frozen time for his next assignment, which was ultimately helping the survivors of Black Mesa (Alyx, Barney, Eli, etc) take down what happened because of Black Mesa's mistake (combine invasion, seven hour war, etc).nukchebi0 wrote:

It's a fecking computer game. If he was a looser who didn't know which end of a gun was which the gameplay would have been remarkably short.

Imagine how fun it would be if every third shot you fired you had a 50% chance of shooting some body part.Ty wrote:

Who wants to play the role of a scientist who isn't shooting stuff, rather just walking around evading any hostiles and doing reserch, solving more puzzles etc? Actually, I'd play it.
Hazard course explained firearms and operation of random stuff to you in the first game totally in-character.
