Mitch made a gif tutorial already but I find this program a bit easier to use. Some people use it for video editing, but I'm just going to show you the gif making aspect.
It supports the following file extensions:
.avi .divx .mpg .mpeg .mpv .m1v .dat .anim .flm .gif .png .bmp .tga .jpg .jpeg .iff .avs .vdr
(kinda like the VLC media player of video editing/converters - supports just about everything)
First off you need to download Virtual Dub here.
Extract the entire zip file into a folder (you will run it from that folder so put it in your docs or desktop). It's less than 2MB unzipped.
I have the 1.7.8 (stable) version so if you download the newer experimental version, the GUI might be a bit different I'm not sure.
You should end up with something like this...
