If you intend to play online you'll have to pay for it like an Xbox live account. I ran the game just fine with no crashes except if I had the Steam overlay, Xfire and FRAPS running at the same time. If you've never played GoW and you can see it for quite cheap go for it. Only issue with installing the game is that it takes a long time. It's a 7.4GB DVD-9, installed it takes up 10GBs.

I'd favour the 360 version, in my professional opinion.
Allow me to butt in and rephrase the original question:
If you have a PC but not an X360, should you (especially if you've never played it before) consider playing Gears of War on the system you actually have?

<$20, then yeah, pick it up. You might want to play all the way through it in one go though, as it likes to lose saved games.
