I dunno, depends on your budget, and also, where you can buy graphics cards. Best Buy had a really sweet deal with the HD 3870, they were going for less than 220 dollars a while back before Christmas, no idea how they are now. But if you're willing to spend a little more, you'll be amazed by the ATi card, it's an amazing piece of machinery for the price.
Is, but if I remember right, it gets booted in the butt by the newer 8800GT iteration.
Depends, nVidia whore fanboys will tell you that the 8800GT is an amazing card--and it is. But considering the price of the 8800GT is substantially higher (especially, for example, Best Buy--not a good example, but Best Buy had awesome sales going on) and only for 2 more frames. It won't let you max out in Crysis, and you know...it's a good card, but all nVidia products get all psyched up like they're something they aren't.
The HD 3870 consumes less power, is
almost as fast, runs silent, and runs cooler, which can lead to better Overclocking abilities.
The real downside comes with ATi's drivers, from what I have read, it seems that ATi still has trouble. One of my colleagues who uses an HD 3870 had trouble forcing the beautiful 24xAA in the Graphics Control Panel, although it worked for him in the end.
(That's another cool thing--ATi's current gen 24xAA actually looks better than nVidia's x16 (R600's didn't), but of course, that can be considered subjective)
But of course, your money, you follow the brands you want to. Personally, I don't believe in brand names, but product names. If it has what I want, I take it. Price considered, ATi is offering a pretty kickass card for pretty stinking cheap considering it
is competing with a pretty high end card for mid range pricing.

8800GT.
The 8800GT is around $250 right now.
Here's a good alternative to the 8500GTI don't know if your PSU has a lot of power adapters, but a lot of PSUs that have gotten produced in the era of PCIe tend to have that.
Hope that helps.
