Wow.

BTEC is a totally separate qualification from GCSE/A-Level that you can get on many different levels. I started studying one at 13 and did it over 3 years when i got the First Diploma for Aviation Pursuits. I also have the Public Services BTEC. They count for UCAS points so they DO help with your uni applications, but they won't do shit for you if you don't have good GCSE grades and good AS grades, as well as getting the A2 grades the uni conditionally accepts you with.

When people say they are equivalent to 4 GCSEs or 3 A-Levels, they mean equivalent. Having in intermediate BTEC doesn't give you four GCSEs. It is merely an equivalent qualification.

BTECs are vocational. They are there to give you the specific knowledge and skills you need for a trade. I have 12 GCSEs and 4 AS-Levels (I dropped out after that) and now I work for HSBC earning up to £20,000 a year at bottom level, and I'm on fast-track to junior management (6 months as a cashier, 12 months in sales, then a year or so general training). My missus on the other hand, got GCSEs, then studied for her BTEC Diploma in Care, and is now at Uni studying to be a midwife. When she qualifies in 18 months she'll walk into a £20,000+ job too. I got my job based not much on my qualifications but on my experience in retail and sales, and in an office based role, coupled with a cracking good interview on the day.

Both sets of qualifications do the job if you take the right courses to suit your needs.

BTECs are just fail.
My mum is closesly involved with the education system and she said that the government attempt to make them seem much more valuable than they actually are. Employers value gcse qualifications higher than BTEC, and the kids that think this isn't true are jus gettin a duff deal by doin BTECs.
Your not going to get into any good uni/job with BTECs. In fact all the unis I applied to (when it was my time to) didnt even accept BTECs.

I know people that have done BTECs in countryside management instead of A-levels. Just a waste of time.

Off topic: GCSEs were a piece of piss. Also unis look at AS results but mainly predicted grades
People doing BTEC's dont normally go to uni. They get a job.
And employers dont value BTECs, so they dont get a good one
That's absolute rubbish. More vocational qualifications are in high demand by employers because they demonstrate you can do the job, rather than being more abstract academia.

I found it hard to get jobs in my field after finishing uni, but after I had a few vocational qualifications under my belt, it was easy to get decent jobs. The job I'm in now I am only really doing to get more vocational qualifications for free while I work there to diversify my skill set.

lol.

Really, don't talk crap please. GCSEs are a stepping stone for A levels. GCSEs are academical standards which allow a pupil to get a 60% idea about A levels, not an exam made for getting a job. They are only useful as a tracker for universities to see if your progress has been balanced throughout school.

BTECs were created for kids who aren't going to take the extra leap and reach university. They were created to employ practical skills with young students, not to help their academic abilities for the later years in school.

Both sets of courses are very different in specific areas. Both have their downfalls and both have their practicalities. But if there is something that you are going to be arguing about, it should be which of the higher education courses are the best for jobs, not GCSEs and BTECs.

Like A leves compared to Highers and Advanced Highers and the European/International bachaloriate.

It's a stupid discussion.
lol I was just being a fag.

Don't want to offend people but BTECs are generally what the lower academic achievers go for (in my area anyway).

Others (like myself) do GCSEs then move on to A-Levels, and go to university.

Although my sister left school after her A-Levels and is now working for Price Water House cooper (one of the top accountancy firms in the country) and doing very well for an 18 year old. She has a company car and they pay for her college and exams to get further accounting qualifications.

If you're dropping out of school at 16 then btec is the way to go, much more useful in getting you a job than gcses if they're all you've got.
If you want the best jobs however then gcse->Alevels->university is your best bet.
