It seems as though no one in this community is playing Unreal 3. In fact, that's probably because there actually isn't anybody playing it...

Any particular reason why? In my mind, Crysis, Call of Duty 4 and Unreal Tournament 3 are the 3 biggest shooters of the year. Yet this latest title has really failed to make a mark in some circles. The devoted old-school of Unreal / Quake players are surely-enough lapping it up, but it seems to have slipped by the wayside in other FPS communities.

Anyone play the demo? Nobody considering picking up the full game? Even though it isn't your usual decent/slow-paced shooter with tactics, it is still a great continuation of a great shooter-- albeit even if the fast arcade twitchfest FPS game seemed to fade out in the 1990's. In a modern day setting, where the FPS market is flooded with military shooters and historical-themed games, this is a breath of fresh air. I've been itching to break free of the monotony of slow-paced team-shooters, and to let rip with some pure player-skill-determines-all twitchfest action! This game is receiving some pretty decent reviews - generally around 8.5/9.0 - but I really think that nowhere near enough people are dipping into their pockets to buy it.

Take a chance, it's very much in the same vein of Team Fortress 2, quick and innocent fun .

I like UT2004, but I wouldn't pay 50 bucks for something i'd only play on LAN a couple times...

Yeah, I appreciate that, UT2004 was a damn good game for LAN.

However, it's not as if there isn't a 'serious' side to the UT series. I'd warrant it that there are probably larger 'hardcore' gaming communities for the Unreal series than there are for BF2 / BF2142. All of the competitive gaming and '1337' gaming seems to take place either in Quake/Unreal or Counter-Strike. So, I couldn't personally discard the game as a one-off LAN thrasher, because it definitely seems to have the depth and potential for something more serious and competitive .

I guess another part of it is that there are a number of mods or free games that compare very well with Unreal/Quake style shooters, whereas games that tend to be less arcade-y and more tactical often stand out highly above mods and freeware in their genre.
Keep in mind I'm a broke college kid who really only pays for the games he REALLY wants. If I had money to spare, I'd probably pick it up, as I liked the demo. I DID just buy a Wii, but my roomate went in halfsies on it, and it's great for parties
back to the topic though... I have nothing against Unreal, I just don't have 50 dollars for it.

it's basically exactly the same as UT2004 with gears of war graphics.  that's it.  you aren't gunna bring player back by offering a shiny version of a 4 year old game.

I bet they do, Unreal had just as many if not more fanboys that COD series which im not wasting a dollar or second on after cod1. If its non-team based deathmatches.. unreal its the way to go. Cod4 isnt massivly revamped is it? why has everyone gone onto that bandwagon?

So were the Half Life series. So were all of the Source games (obviously). So were all of the Call of Duty games (CoD4 is slightly different, although I'd argue for the worse- console conversions forthelose). All games in a series obviously share some common ground: the same engine, the same theme, the same setting, the same controls etc. Sure, Unreal 3 is to some degree a reskin of Unreal 2004- but UT2004 was pretty successful - and if it ain't broke, don't fix it! As OneSixty already said: CoD4 wasn't anything new at all, but that still rocketed. If you wanted to compare in detail, UT3 does add more 'new' things to the game than CoD4 does to its own predecessors.  New game types, a whole new spin on the Single-Player (no longer straight-forward tournament, now a storyline-campaign), new features, DX10 support etc. A new engine (Unreal 3 Engine). New vehicles/weapons too. CoD4 pretty much dropped the ball on all of those points: they just tweaked the engine they used years ago in Call of Duty 2, and basically reskinned the fully-automatic weapons from the Allies/Axis sets as M16's and AK's.

I am not anti-CoD4 by any means. It's just that after 2-3 days of playing Call of Duty 4 I became bored and dissatisfied (I already have 1000+ hours racked up in other Call of Duty titles), but after 2-3 days of Unreal 3 I'm still rearing to go play it some more. It builds and adds to an already hugely successful arcade-Quake type game, and doesn't make any major mistakes about it. The biggest criticism of it so far is the console-esque menu system. I think you'll find there were far worse criticisms of, for example, Counter-Strike: Source when it first launched as a new reincarnation (hitboxes anyone?), and with Call of Duty 4 now that it has launched (broken sniper/ACOG hitregistry, numerous crashing issues, release-date master server problems worldwide).

Don't dismiss this game just because it's not revolutionary and innovative .

Hate to shamelessly bump something that's still floating at the top, but my God...

Have been watching the cast hosted at PwnageTV of one of the first 'properly' organized UT3 tournaments- 1v1 Duel. It's insane. I cannot actually believe that people have maps and techniques dialled in so perfectly within such a short time span. This game has barely been out 2 weeks, and yet still this tournament is showing some high-class play. Generally pretty entertaining to watch too-- funny commentary, with IRC shoutouts galore .

For anyone interested in tuning in live, or perhaps watching a replay of an earlier round (the full tournament will probably be uploaded by the time you click the link):

I think I meant it as an average review score being around 8.5-9.0, as in the forward slash being used to represent two alternatives, not a ratio.

I enjoyed the demo, but I didn't like the way they went graphically.
UT3 takes the graphics of Gears of War, which wasn't a plus point for me.

Nothing can beat UT2004.

It's loads of fun with low-gravity and insta-gib.

..But I suppose, so are games like Quake.
