Don't have any pictures of my computer gaming 'place', but here's my PS3 setup. These are old pictures, I just recently got speaker stands for the Front right and left speakers, so they're now immediately to the right and left of the tv.

No kids, only a cat that's too lazy to go over there. I haven't had any issues with it set like that, and it's been there for over a year now. I didn't want to put it in the furniture, only because the PS3 gets mega hot, as I'm sure you know.
