I recently bought a new computer with relatively good specs, but I've been having a problem: BF2 freezes fairly frequently. I am usually going fine, great fps, running games at high settings then all of a sudden BAM! I lock up. I can't alt tab out or cntrl alt delete to get out of the game and end up having to restart. I have all the latest drivers and have tried running the game at all different video levels, but nothing seems to affect me locking up. It varies how long it takes me too lock up, as sometimes it will do it every ten minutes, or sometimes i will be able to run everything smoothly for hours at a time. I haven't OC'd it or anything, but I got the impression that my video card was overheating. I have 5 80mm case fans for cooling, in an X-Navigator case, So I would think that my cooling is pretty sufficient. I put an NV Silencer Rev. 3 on it to see if it would help any, but no cigar. My video card is running cooler, about 55 C idle as compared to about 62 C idle, but I'm still getting the same problem. Not really sure what to do at this point, so any help would be appreciated.

What are your temps at load? I have an x850xtpe, so I use ATI tool .24, and I can set it to try and keep GPU under 40 degrees celcius. See if there are any tools for Nvidia based cards, I'm sure there are some. I found before I used the tool that my temps would be around 70 degrees celcius and my fan would be at 10%. I then installed the tool, and set it monitor the temps, and keep them below 40c. So, when I;m running the game it will get to about 55c, and my fan is at 100%. It also sounds like your having problems with the game itself, so try reinstalling it.

Well my XFX 6600 GT was making just the same some times ago. My computer also crashed when I tried watch some video with any media player. I still don't know what was wrong with it, I reinstalled all of my drivers etc but nothing was working, so after all I formated my C and reinstalled everything again (well I was making it anyways and it don't take so much time) and after that everything was working again. I think there's something wrong with register but no idea what. And what comes to over heating, I think it's not that because that's normal temperature for NVIDIA cards.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot, once I got some spyware on my computer which made my Call of Duty crashing all the time and maybe you have some spyware/virus on your computer, who knows.

Well i know that it would be nice to see what my card is running at under load, but unfortunetly I don't know what it is because when it locks up, I can't get out to see my temperatures. That's one thing that I may not have made clear, but BF2 doesn't just crash, my whole computer locks up. Occasionally when I have background tasks like teamspeak running I can hear and sparingly speak to other people, but not much. My power supply is a cheap 500w that doesn't have anything fancy like UPS or anything, but i got good reviews on newegg and seems to be working fine. This problem has been completely limited to BF2, but that is also the only application I run that demands such high video standards, so that might not be a completely fair judge. I have reinstalled BF2 from when v1.03 patch came out and about half the people had to reinstall, so though not for a related reason, I have been having the problem before and after the install. The game as a whole has been running fine other than this, even at max settings. (Though as stated earlier I tried turning them down and I couldn't tell that it made a noticeable difference. As far as the memory suggenstion, that was one of my first ideas too along with perhaps a bad pin on the preccessor, but I was talking to some people at a lan party that I went to about it and they figured that it probably wasn't the memory because I would be getting about half hard freezes and about half BSODs, and I have yet to have one of those on this computer. As far as spyware, I run very strict anti-virus programs and keep a close watch on my router along with frequent virus checks, so I don't think it's that. Thanks for all the help so far, I pretty much just reached the conclusion that something was wrong with my video card by process of elimination.

And no, I don't.

Dude, not real sure if this helps or not but try deleting and then re-installing your a/c off the EA BF2 servers.
If its the video card (not being upto spec), then you would prolly have problems from the get-go. This sounds like you have been running BF2 for a while now.

Huh? What do you mean by a/c? I've been running BF2 since August with no problems with the exceptions of this.

i get the same problem and it sucks dick, ill be playing and then it freezes randomly, seems like lag untill i realise that its crashed, it happens basically every time i play....

i dont know why, i got no viruses, and my vid card is pretty good nividia fx6600 256mb, but i get the same crashing problems with a couple of other games i have.

i do have to clean my pc alot though, i got 2 long haired cats, so you can imagine the fur that gets built up in there..

Yeah Philbymaris it sounds like we have the same problem, and I really feel your pain. I do have a dog that sheds a fair amount, but the computer is up on a table and the dog rairly goes in there, and I have yet to see a dog hair in my computer.

What other games are you having trouble with? I have some other games, but I haven't even tested them because the graphics requirements are so reduced. I don't have anything like COD2 or HL2, about the most demanding thing I have is BF1942.

Have yo done anything that seems to have helped? At the aforementioned lan party I ended up taking off the side of the case and putting a frozen water bottle right next to the video card and that seemed to help some. However, it's hard to to tell what helps and what doesn't because half the time I don't change anything and I can run it for 3 hours instead of 30 minutes.

ok guys try this. uninstall BF2 COMPLETELY (incl. your online account as well). Reinstall the game with all the patches and get your account off the BF2 servers. It should now run fine

Actually, it turned out that my computer was too close to the back wall, and once i moved it away things are fine. Because of the exhaust on the video card cooler and my computer only being about four inches from the wall, it was getting hot and creating a pocket of hot air. Now that i moved it about eight inches away things are running fine.

really? i will do the same,
can u tell me if when the game crashes, it ends up after a while going to a pitch blue screen and the sound seems to be choppy , lofi, scrambled game sounds then, no recovery unless restart.

Another thing to check is the chipset fan.  I had some problems with the chipset fan on my mother board.  For $20 US you can get a better heat sink fan combination that will take care of any problems.

MY psu has 2 fans works great. I also will only use kingmax memory, because other chips always buggered my comp.

Whenever I used to go down, there was no recovery unless restart, but it was a BF2 screen that it locked up on in game, and I was gettting repetitive sounds from whatever the last thing I heard was. If a tank was just firing a shell, it was pretty annoying.

That would be annoying.  And I am faced with the fact that I should have read the thread better.  If your machine is overheating like that, you might want to look at faster fans or higher volume fans.

Yeah, and if you had read the thread even more throughly, you would have seen that I bought an NV Silencer 3 for my video card, and it solved my problems after I moved it away from the wall enough to let it do its job. I also had 4 80 mm fans in my case, and recently changed one of these out with a 120 mm, so my cooling is pretty adequete.
