I shoot occasionally with my Cadet SQN, using .22 rifles. When we are finished, it's bolts out and everything like that. The rifles, bolts and magazines are all stored separate. You have to be safe with these things.

Anyone here familiar with "The Darwin Awards"? There was one particular 'winner' who received an award because he slept with a loaded gun on his bedside table. During the night, someone phoned him. Mistaking his gun for the phone (that was also on the table), he proceeded to put the gun to his head and blow half his head off.

Whoops...

Is crime seriously that bad in America, that you need to sleep with loaded weapons?

Mcminty.
No, its the fact that most Americans somehow feel big and cool sleeping with a gun, even in some safe suburb somewhere.  Honestly, Ive shot weapons and enjoy shooting them, and have access to a 12 guage and a .22 in the household I'm in, but half of the people who say they sleep with a weapon under their pillow dont even need a fucking gun within 30 feet of them.  Honestly, crime isnt bad and youre right.  It just pisses me off when people say and do things like this, for no reason at all.  Just because you have a gun under your pillow, it doesnt make you Mr. Badass.  Tell me the crime rates in your community, then I could judge.  And I can almost assure you that you dont need one even in the same room as you sleep.

All I have is a 5$ Katana.  You really shouldn't keep a round chambered all the time if you want the gun to last.  Like I said before, you're wearing out the spring if a round is chambered all the time.

I keep my duty weapon (Glock 22C) loaded on a desk in my room, unless my 6 year old is at my house then I keep everything locked in my safe. You just cant be too careful with kids. I have a push button keypad on my safe though, which is real quck to open compared to the old rotating dial/combination lock.

I own a few handguns, and I am CCW(concealed carry weapon) permit holder.

If you live alone then I see no problem with keeping a loaded firearm next to your bed. But if there are other people living with you, it is an accident waiting to occur. Example: you could possibly wake in the middle of the night from a horrible dream, and see someone walking around your room. You're spooked, and  without being fully awake/rational end up shooting someone you care about.

If you live with other people, for their safety, get one of those small safes with the numeric keypads on the front. The keypad safes are relatively easy and quick to open, and requires your brain to think/awaken so that you can make better decisions.

You can judge if I will be safe if I tell you my crime rate in my neighborhood? That has got to be the biggest pile of crap since I saw an elephant take a shit next to me.

So you think "crime" only occurs in certain areas and at certain times, you know how to schedule your day/night around crime?

That's like saying "Oh it's after 10pm nothing bad is going to happen I live in safe crime free neighborhood!"

How can you justify because your sleeping that your safe? That has got to be our most vulnerable time someone could enter your house slice your neck all the way back to your spine and make off with your loot. All without you seeing or hearing nothing except for the few seconds of your last seconds of life your wondering why your sucking air through your new neck hole and blood is spurting everywhere as you bleed out in about 1 minute.

You must really be "Mr. Badass" if your all knowing, aware of every movement and point of entry into your home is safe and secure while you are sleeping. Wow, that's some heightened levels of unconsciousness I have not achieved so I'll have my handgun loaded and ready and pray I am able to awake in time and shoot the bastard in time it takes for him to move the 15 feet space of my bedroom. How fast can you walk/run 15 feet in? That's not alot of time is it?

I'm sure the intruder will text you on your cell phone before he decides to break in and let you go to your other room load your shotgun and I'm sure he'll let you come back to your room and aim the rifle at him cause burglars are very fair.

Good luck with that.

The round chambered doesn't wear on the weapon as far as I know, I could be wrong.  You have a point about the mag spring, though.  I don't keep the mag full in my pistol, I pop a few rounds out and rotate the mags now and then, keeping the unused mag empty.

I applaud the reasons for handgun ownership, I really do, but it seems to me as though people arn't smart enough to be able to protect themselves with a gun. There is no respect to the fact that a handgun is designed to kill people.
I have a .22 rifle - I use it to shoot rabbits and possums mostly. I keep it locked in the attic with the bolt removed with the bullets stored elseware. May seem a bit excessive to some of you guys, (it's required by law by the way,) but there was only one accidental gun death in New Zealand last year - I remember it, some bloke failed to identify his target while out hunting. Thankfully, we seem to know that we're too stupid to protect ourselves with guns.

Since this is in the Junk Drawer I'll say no more lest I spark a debate.
Americans like guns. Hell, our country was founded by fundamental terrorists.

But having a piece under a pillow isnt a great idea, unless you are Jack Bauer

"No, Other"

There's a wooden baseball bat between my bed & my desk (desk is up against the bed) & a 6" boot knife under my pillow (been there since i was 11).

No guns in my house though, I can legally get one but meh, saw a guy get his hand blown off a long time ago & it kinda scared me away from guns, I think I'm gonna get a handgun soon anyway though, just for the hell of it. Plus if you get within my arms reach you lose, unless you have a space suit on or something.

Well seeing as how a big percentage of intruders would pick an easy target if they posses any low level of intelligence, and they knew the household occupants had firearms they would more than likely pick another place to rob or wait until you are not home.

Which at that point if you still have and intruder knowingly break in to your home knowing you have a firearm then he is really up to no good probably meaning to harm you, and I hope my advantage of knowing my house layout and me sensing a break in would give me the few seconds/minutes I need to neutralize him.

If I saw/encountered an intruder in my house I would be the only alive witness to the incident in question, dead people do not have their side of the story to tell.

In Finland if you even think about taking a gun while approaching a burglar or something similar will get YOU in jail... (Even if it is registered) In Switzerland apparently you can even shoot at unarmed burglars. But here I am too young to purchase a firearm. I read in a local gun forum that one has loaded weapons around his house, that if he needs one he mustn't search

Here is an question for you = why are the crime rates way lower in country's that have weapons labelled as illegal, than in country's that permit weopons?

Seriously the USA's social behavior towards each other is even worsen than the Somalia.

I think u should raise ur children better, not show them violance (that will also save me the annoyance of USA childs screaming in BF2)

If it is about sex then u are all protective and all, but when it is about deadly killing machines, u have no problem.
