the economics of that do make sense to me. i guess.

similarly, are small EVs a non-starter because of those initial costs and outlays? plus i guess limited size/weight of batteries?

The smaller the better for EVs, as far as function goes, but the cost is high and people don't want to spend a lot for a small car.

Development cost of a new platform is high, risk of selecting the wrong battery technology is also high.

The car is literally unobtainable for the vast majority of Americans. The emissions mandate stole American muscle cars from the American people. If Trump wasn't such a fucking asshole the Republicans would be right about a lot of things.
60 grand msrp is just a little over average for new vehicles currently, though?

how many times are you going play coy at polishing maga knob in 2025? this is like the second or third time in recent days.

now you're talking about getting into harry potter. that jk rowling sure does have a point, doesn't she? (/s)

Base Model F-150 starts at $40,000. Ford Lightning starting is $50,000. Base Model Honda Civic is $24,000.

People loading up their Ford truck with options is a personal choice. Dodge Challenger's going off the market is the result of government decisions.

...

The Biden administration was a disaster. He failed to secure his successor. He spent billions on green energy companies and microchip manufacturers. Healthcare expansion? Nope. Microchips!

The only good thing is that he helped smoke a lot of Russians in Ukraine.

lol but starting msrp for type-r is still like 50k. we're comparing what to what to, here? are the people in the market for a honda civic usually weighing it against options with like 5x the horses?

maybe find something else to assuage assuage your early onset midlife crisis. using a big, obnoxious rumbly engine for your commute puts you in a space where you're sharing Venn space with coal rollers, or boomers trying to reconnect with their youth. it's probably for the best that we continue to shift away from that sort of thing.

i would not be mourning and thanks-obamaing over something like the challenger. if anything, the country could use more pro-environment trends. i'm sure something will fill the niche anyway.

Of course the Type R is expensive. I am pointing out that a new vehicle is still accessible. People don't have to buy $60,000 cars.

I still do online dating. Having a nice car certainly helps.

I couldn't care less about the environment. I understand you live in the woods with forest critters.

beats living in a mercury-tainted apartment above a dentist's office.

but yes, i am contractually obligated as a pacific northwesterner to speak for the trees.

you should be concerned about the environment too. in a decade you'll probably be posting about all the southerners fleeing their country fried states for the milder climates of the 120+F north.

tangentially, stuff like reckless encroachment on wilderness seems like a great way to blunder into novel viruses. it's either going to be that or incurring the wrath of the ents.

The dentist office is mostly closed. I rarely see it open. The dentist got long COVID and can't dentist anymore.

So I bought the car. I am picking it up Saturday. I am also picking up the new girl I am sleeping with and taking her with home with me and the car.

I was planning on breaking up with her Wednesday but I figured I may as well sleep with her again since she would be down for it.

Anyway, I didn't go for the compact SUV. I instead went with the small 4 door.

I drove the SUV and didn't like how it felt like this big unwieldy thing. I couldn't imagine having to make a swift turn or lane change in it. It also felt harder to park than the small sedan. Both the sedan and SUV were 15 inches shorter than my current car but it still just felt too big.

Also I had the cash to pay off the entire car at once. The SUV would have required me financing like $6,000. And for what? Can't even park the fucking thing.

apart from SUVs being the stereotypical teacher ride, i have no idea why you even wanted one. you're a childless white collar person living on their own in an apartment. what is the biggest thing you even haul around? a notebook?

more gas and probably worse turning, and for what.

if you got a manual, i hear that's pretty good for antitheft. nobody drives manual anymore.

i cannot think of a single "manly" suv. it's either soccer mom or compensator. there's no in between.

You've got this backwards, you buy a full size truck, then spend the rest of your life lurching and screeching around town looking for a space that will fit, driving miles out of town for gas 'at the proper price' and whining when your driveshafts give out even though 'it should take a lift kit and double size tyres no problem'

Another issue with trucks is that people are stealing the catalytic converters. The trucks need big cats to process the emissions. A small car like the one I bought has small cat and also low clearance. It isn't worth the trouble to crawl under a sedan to steal the cat.

Trump should issue an executive order banning catalytic converters - problem solved.

Actually outside the LA bowl they're more or less redundant, but everyone has to suffer 5-10% extra fuel consumption because stupid people choose to live in a stagnant vortex.
