a compact suv does not look manly
Don't you drive a Dodge Neon?RTHKI wrote:

If you are going to move to anywhere outside of maybe Staten Island you shouldn't even own a car by the way.

Yeah because your red state doesn't build roads.

ideas of roads. good band name. post-punk group formed in the basements of michigan/illinois/ohio.
They discontinued the Dodge Challenger to shift focus to EVs.

Another great move by Biden administration. Pushing EVs.
That administration was a disaster.

Theyre literally still making it, just an electric version.
Also how many guys over the age of 25 or younger than midlife crises actually like that car?

The Challenger is gone. They brought back the Charger as electric.pirana6 wrote:

$60,000 MSRP
$60,000 MSRP
$60,000 MSRP
$60,000 MSRP
$60,000 MSRP
$60,000 MSRP
$60,000 MSRP
Starting MSRP ia $60,000.
The car is literally unobtainable for the vast majority of Americans. The emissions mandate stole American muscle cars from the American people. If Trump wasn't such a fucking asshole the Republicans would be right about a lot of things.

almost all cars resemble that now, don't they? even anecdotally, looking on the roads at new cars. the entire category of 'affordable first driver' or 'small city hatchback' has slowly dwindled to like 2-3 models, and even they all seem based on the same frame or chassis or whatever it's called. seems to be an unintended consequence of the push to electric that it's not worth anyone's time to design and engineer small and affordable cars.
Small affordable cars still exist depending on what you consider affordable. You can get a new entry level sedan for $19,000.
The last ICE Dodge Challenger had a base model cost $32,000.
It doubled in price. It turns out the Federal government basically pressure the car company with fines. $250 million fines in just one year for Dodge parent company.

What are you thinking of getting, Mac?
Outlander Sport. Compact SUV

Don't forget snow tyres, or you just spin all the wheels.SuperJail Warden wrote:

It looks manly and considering we get snow it is justified.

Cars don't have a frame or chassis an more. They're all the same because once you've engineered four seats, four wheels and an engine and skinned it as small as possible you're left with the default cube.uziq wrote:

Its rarely been worth anyone's time to engineer small cars. Mostly they're sold on a wafer thin profit or small loss which is made up with financing, servicing and the hope that people will become bonded to the brand and trade up to higher model or a bigger car next time.

i mean in the sense that like 3-4 car brands will literally all use the same frame at the same factory or whatever. your choice for small city hatchback is like generic car A but with citroen/peugeot/volvo or toyota/honda/etc. trim and branding. it’s basically the exact same car.
e: i see it’s called ‘platform sharing’ and ‘rebadging’. i mean the economics of it make sense from a design and manufacture point of view.

I'm not aware that they all come from the same factory, there's a bit of cross-badging, but whether they do or don't they are going to be very very similar.
Apart from putting people in upside down or something there's not much to be done to make something radically different.

i dunno, maybe it is a case of iterative design leading to it being a solved engineering problem. but there was a much wider variety in design and shape to hatchbacks even 15 years ago. now they really all have the exact same outline and probably drive the same.
Platform sharing has been around a long time - within a group eg VAG, PSA-Citroen, manufacturer groups still tend to develop their own platform and not share with others, its probably changing.
Apart from the platform its all marketing and styling led.
As things go to shit car companies become more conservative, each new release means betting the future of the company on its success, they can't take too much of a risk on being too far outside the norm.
There's the odd anomaly like the new Mini, but generally they're purposely the same as everyone else with differentiation done by advertising and maybe a different grille.
As with a lot of things many customers don't really care what car they drive as long as it does the job and doesn't have any really annoying feature.

i'll stick to my own shared platform.

No brand - not worth instagramming

they've gotta be some of the most instagrammed vehicles on earth, lol.
And another thing, manufacturers will keep the same platform going as long as they possibly can.
"The all new-Toyota Corolla" is probably sitting on a 10 year old platform, just new styling.
Various Korean and Chinese manufacturers started their lives buying obsolete platforms and tooling, eg Daewoo started off with Renault platforms I think.
But why is it a problem to develop a new platform?
Getting ride, handling, performance, emissions, cost etc all tuned at least as well as the competitor who is trying to do it better, quicker and cheaper than you while you're doing it is hard, dull and expensive work.
Tooling is expensive, that and all the development work goes in the bin if it doesn't work out.
