Mine is Black Hawk Down.  I think the scenes flying those Black Hawks and driving the hummvies into the "red zone" are great, you can feel you are going in with these guys.  Listening it with a 5.1 audio system at high volume is terrific.  And the direction by Ridley Scott is a masterpiece.  He shows how to make a great movie without a superstar.  Saw it more than 10 times.

Star Wars.

This 1977 masterpiece showed how the average joe on a dead-end planet could become embroiled in a war across many star systems, let alone pieces of land.  In the end, the contribution made by each and every person leads to the end result and I think, while highlighting this one person's efforts, also showed that teamwork was needed throughout.  Not just applicable to wartime but to every-day life.

Oh and it had Carrie Fisher in that little white outfit.  MMmmmmmmmmmm

No.  This could have been a GREAT movie, but Russian soldiers with British accents? No way.  Someone needs to get Rachel Weisz some voice acting lessons.

This is just way to hard, maybe if the title was best war movie for a particular war. Even then I can’t make my mind up about 1/2 dozen great WW2 movies.
A Bridge To Far  is in my opinion has the best cast and acting closely followed by The Great Escape. I don’t have much time for Saving Private Ryan apart from the first few minutes it followed the basic WW2 movie script, and sampled from other older movies, The Longest Day for starters.
Band of Brothers was pretty well done and I think the touch at the end of each episode where you heard the real soldier’s talk of their experience was a master stroke. It added realism and a documentary touch to what could have been a run of the mill Call of Duty style TV show.
Platoon is a classic along with the Deer Hunter and who can forget Apocalypse Now, those 3 are must have DVD’s with great actors and directors on top of their games. Someone mentioned Black Hawk Down, not for me no thank you, gung ho hollywoodism showing American soldiers destroying rag tag skinnies. After the movie did any folks bother to see what state the country is in now? It’s a shame they didn’t have oil isn’t it.

To pick just one is really hard, and it’s easy to forget the great war movies based on wars like the American civil war etc...

LMAO, I'm not sure it's that kind of sniping.

The Light Horsemen. It tells a story without all the Hollywood crap. And it's one you can watch with your mother (well, you know, if you have to). Also I like Australian films.

I also like Enemy at the Gate (yes, even with the English accents), Hunt for Red October (even with the Scottish accents), and Saving Private Ryan (even with Tom Hanks) and Full Metal Jacket.

My favourite battle scene is the opening of Gladiator... pity 'bout the rest of the movie.

Star Wars is one of my favourite movies, but not because it's about war.

1. Der Untergang (acting second to none, epic events, great cinema: Otto Ganz IS Adolf Hitler)
2. Saving Private Ryan (opening scenes warrant watching it alone)
3. Black Hawk Down (tense, action-packed & realistic)
4. Das Boot (tense & realistic)
5. Platoon (best film at showing our more primal instincts)

1."Johnny got his gun": Never saw a war movie before, that shows you the cruelty in this way. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067277/

2. "Im Westen nichts neues" ("All Quiet on the Western Front"): Just an amazing book and movie.

Tom Hanks is a great actor, just not for war movies.  Did partake in classic 'Pistol vs. Tank' conflict though.

No matter who he is playing in whatever movie in whatever country... all of Sean Connery's characters will be Scottish.

Why is nobody saying The Great Escape or Helly's Heroes? Sure, Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, all good and I certainly like them; but they don't beat the classics.

Come on! Kelly's Heroes! Donald Sutherland as " Sgt. Oddball" talking about how the only weakpoint in the German Tiger tanks is right up the ass! Classic!

True dat.  Also had Connery in it I believe.  And I'm sure he sounded pretty damn Scottish.

Das Boot (though it was even better as a TV series) - tense, claustrophobic, and the characters are people, not caricatures spouting dumb one-liners.
Spartacus - idealistic, uplifting and Heroic
Come and See - The german invasion of russia through the eyes of a horror-struck child
Zulu - had to include one dumb but fun movie. worth it just for the sound of the zulus beating their assagais on their shields.
