Yes, the US Govt are charging their citizens, but the BBC had a story on their website saying you could write some kind of 'script/bill/etc' to the US Govt and then pay back later.

Also, come on, if you have money as a poster earlier insinuated, would you make the choice to live in a war-torn , dangerous middle-eastern country with a terrorist organisation supported by the government? I would reckon most of these people aren't the richest Americans out there.

Some people are also Lebonese citizen's. Not sure the point I'm making, but the dual citizenship could play a roll in this money rumor. lol

I'm trying to find sorces for it right now, because I'm very interested in how much it costs. As I said in a earlier post I say it on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 so it might be a rumor. I wonder if you can find it online at a government website, if anyone finds a link to this information please post it.

Checked google for the charging thing, didnt find the BBC article but did find this:

http://www.halifaxlive.com/content/view/797/2/

The bill/script I was referring to seems to be a 'repatriation loan' in this article.

*EDIT*
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13902115/

For those that don't want to read, its $300 per person apparently, but then you're left at Cyprus, responsible for your own accomodation and flights. The fact its holiday season in Cyprus also complicated matters.

"...evacuated Americans would be asked to pay commercial rates, and if they did not have the money to promise to pay in the future. "

pulled from the http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13902115/   link

If your american and your in another country especially a middle eastern country you should have some means of extra cash to get out in an emergency.  If you don't you made a bad decision to ever leave america with out proper funds.

$300 to live = fine by me

I have family and friends that would be more then happy to help me get out of a warzone.

My recommendation:  Bill the Israeli government.  If they won't pay, sue them in international court.

What do you expect. Our government told all those people not to go there. they didnt listen and now they are stuck. If your house burns down the fire department bills you, so does the paramedics. Why should this be different. Especially after they were warned not to travel to that part of the world.

Simple solution: if you're a civilian westerner, don't go to Arabville. If you do go, travel lightly with expectations that at any moment you'll be expected to evacuate.

when did our govts tell people not to go there before this all started?  I know that all the Canadian Lebanese there were visiting family.  They still pay Canadian taxes.   I'm sure those Americans had to as well, doesn't tax cover protection from police, the military, law?  Since when do you pay for your liberty, I thought it was a right, justice for all, etc.  How much money could possibly be made that wouldn't be negligible in the face of any significant homeland spending?  It's just another message that large moneyholders don't like you and they run countries.  Our PM is being sluggish about a response, and has departed from our reputation as being a neutral, strong mediator type in the international community.  He's taking up a less cooperative stance than the States.  Boo Steven Harper.

But that argument is foolish.  If other countries aren't charging, then it merely proves them to be better protectors of their citizens.  You are, basically, arguing that the criticism is unfair, because if other countries did the same they wouldn't recieve it, when other countries aren't
Point taken. Although it was not the point I was trying to get across.

Reimbursing the State Department for the evacuation is based on a 1956 law, But Secretary Rice is waving the fee...

Looks like it was just an overbblown rumor afterall. But at least the media did it's job of making a whole bunch of people pissed off at the US government for nothing.

they are citizen so they pay taxes as well
Yeah we pay taxes and when we need medical help, we still have to pay for it.

I understand how you feel, but it seems that you think it is odd. When it is more of how the world runs.

My point is the US sucks....

Ok maybe I am being a little immature (point taken) but I just couldnt be bothered to make a full argument. If i was going to it would have been somthing along the lines of, the US would probably have a hard time giving free travel to those in the Middle east due to the political situation and people claiming that some people were not due to taxpayers paid transport, someone would claim one or two were terrorists and besides, this IS a campaign of terror by Israel and America is not that keen too look remotely niterested in helping (too many) of the people there.

OK OK, I've fallen into the 'it's been a long day and I'm being a dick' trap.

Sorry for any offense to any nice Americans.

The whole general sort of comment I was trying to make about the fact that i think it's unfair to charge (if you did) for transport out, for Healthcare (Which you do) and to support israel stand. I've probably voiced myself better on other threads.

Hey,

  OK let's get this straight.

1. the rate is 150-200 dollars + 1 dollar.

2. The most recent bill was late 90s and most Dem's. voted for it.

3. A lot of Euro country's are a lot closer so I would assume it's a bit easier to get em out. I mean sailing a ship from here takes a while ya know. Nearest ships were in Persian gulf I think performing combat Ops.

4. The US provides flights from Cyprus along with evacuation from certain declared parts of Lebanon.

5. The US state department puts out warnings for travelers saying don't go there and the risk of visiting country A is blah blah blah. So you assume your own risk.

6. If your rescued by the US Coast Guard from a sinking boat you are also billed.

7. Say Katrina again you Asshole.....Make it Bush's fault eh.. LOL To bad the Dem. Governor Blanco told the Red Cross and other agency's they "COULD NOT ENTER NEW ORLEANS".  Ya and oh she wouldn't give the President the authority to send in troops either. The Mayor was fucking a monkey from the day before the storm even hit. Blame is fine but partisan blame is just screwing your country.
