Just wondering what everyone thinks in regards to private defense contractors in places of conflict.  Here is a link to some information about them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_mi … contractor

Please keep it informative, opinionated, and intelligent.  I will post my views shortly.

They know what they are getting into when they bid for these contracts.  I'm sorry they some times end up as casualties, but that's the way it goes.

they could quit whenever they want. they are a neccessary evil but they always pissed me off when I was deployed.  Those fuckers did pretty much the same thing we do when it came to regular security and patrols with a fraction of the hours compare to us.  plus, they could quit whenever they want and depending on what kind of contract, they could go home for two weeks every three months sometimes.  They make a shit load of money and could quit whenever they want.  I worked real closely with them for a while, especially when for the month and half they tasked my platoon to the Baghdad Sheraton hotel complex (its actually three 1st class hotels)  if you knew how a lot of there shit works and who contracts what, you might get pissed off.  Alot of cronism and piss fights between retired generals, corporate managers, the state department and the Army.  But, it was always a good feeling knowing that if they pissed me off enough I could always say "SHUT THE FUCK UP" the army had authority over all (except maybe the state department).  did I mention that they could quit whenever they want. well, they can.

what do the mercenaries qualify as in terms of law, are they in US uniform?
If they weren't this would be a good addition to the Guantanamo argument.  They could be captured as terrorists could they not, as long as they have little ID?  (not that they would but could they be)

not neccessarily, they are paid by the Iraqi govt.  but i see your point, now if the Iraqi govt were to be considered a terrorist organization....

to my knowledge, defense contractors are civilians, not listed as soldiers.  Should the Iraqi/Taliban insurgency abide by Geneva Convention laws (which they don't) they could use the same definition used by the US government in dealing with them - enemy combatants.

Also, they are paid by the Iraqi government AND the US government (my and your tax dollars).

and true.  look up KBR jobs if anyones interested in tax free.  you might not be a defense contractor but you would be able to dodge IED's on route tampa for 70,000 dollars a year, tax free. no weapon of course.

I voted second last option.  Not that I care whether they're there or not: I just think mercenaries are the scum of the earth.
