At the time of the Vietnam War (Ssshhhhh, that didn't happen remember?), conscription was in place meaning that you didn't the army, the army made you join!  Most did, but some people like legendary boxer Mohhammed Ali refused and ended up doing time for his refusal.

Most of us, sit in the comfort of our houses "supporting our boys" but what we're really doing is saying, you go off to war and risk your life whilst I'll sit here watching your life and death job played out on TV like a drama.  So, what would you do if the wars we are fighting in now don't go away and our leaders made us join the war effort, what would you honestly do and how would you feel?

Note: I have chosen "only if we were being attacked" because I don't buy all that "pre-emtive" strike bullsh*t.  I would be willing to defend my country but not invade another on some weird idea that attacking them is defending us......

i would join as requested, but would feel sorry for friends/family not knowing if i would come home, but i would be happy to server my country, the only thing stoping me from joining now is the aforementioned friends/family

In Australia we have laws surrounding contentious objection... If I can prove something (eg. I'm a devout Christian and thus can object on religious grounds... stuff like that... Principles count too!) then I can, depending on the Magistrate/Judges decision be either...

1) Forced to join anyway...
2) Excluded from frontline roles...
3) Left out completely...


If, after forced to join I continue to object I can...

1) Be thrown in military prison...
2) Relegated to the support roles of the military...
3) Thrown out completely....

Oh, yeah... Cowardice doesn't count as an excuse...

I am technically a UK citizen although I have duel nationality in the Republic and have 2 passports. I don't think I would fight for England/UK, but again I might depending on the situation , but I would fight if Ireland was threatened.

I had to go with the last option.  Tried to join the airforce.  Took many an aptitude test that said I was best suited for a fighter pilot or astronaut.  Yeah, well #$%& those guys ... bad heart, bad feet, bad eyes, bad lungs.  Not that i'm in an iron lung or anything ... just enough to piss you off really.

Conscription is the ultimate wrong of government: it is an unabashed debasement of individual rights, and the ultimate assertion that individuals have no rights that the government can't take away.  I would strenuously oppose conscription any way that I could, and I wouldn't have to worry about jail while doing it:  I volunteered,  and therefore can't be conscripted.

I am with whittsend on this. Conscription was born during times when the nation itself was under attack and the concept proved flawed ( at least to me ) during the vietnam war when people were forced to fight a war they didn't support thousands of miles from home.

Professional armies need to be made up from volunteers.

I'm medically unfit for duty over here, so I won't be joining on any conscription.
If they re-made a homeguard or something I'd probably end up having to join that.

personally, i'd join up if they called for a draft, but not for one of the "softer services".... definately the marines.... however, changing gears a little, I think that it is a sort of unwritten, unsigned contract that you enter into whenever you are born into a country, especially the United States (im not well-versed enough to debate on other countries, but I'm sure many are like the US), in that while you may control the government (through elections and popular votes), the government controls you.

Basically, its like you need the government to do all these things for you (build roads, schools, general infrastructure.... blah blah blah), and the government needs you to pay the money for all of it. Neither can survive without the other. However, if you fail to do your part, the government can put you in jail, vice-versa, if the government fails to do its job, they can be voted out next election and smeared in history books forever. This is where im headed: the government needs you in the armed forces for something, pre-emptive strike or homeland defense, doesn't matter, that wasn't part of the original question. It is your duty, your end of the bargain, to join up as requested (or get drafted, conscripted, whatever have you), for whatever reason that may be. If you dont, you go to jail. Now, if you dont agree with the reason that you are being drafted, that's when the next election rolls around you vote those people out...... yeah, ive thought about "what if you die in combat before the next election"..... i have two things to say to that. first, hindsight is 20/20, should have known where they were headed, but maybe you couldn't have. also, that's when you object, take the jail sentence, and hope you still have the right to vote next time an election rolls around.

That's a really shit idea. What if you didn't know they were going to start a war when you voted for them? I'm sure most Americans who voted for Bush in '99/'00 whenever it was, didn't know he was going to invade Afghanistan or Iraq. And what about if you voted for the opposition, but lost? You'd still be forced to fight? Sounds wonderful...
