Ok, the other thread about murders in the US got me wondering ... so here are more statistics about death causes in the US.  Here's a snapsnot at the year 2000:

Tobacco - 435,000 (big surprise)
Poor Diet and Physical Inactivity - 365,000  (interesting)
Alcohol - 85,000 (mmmm beer)
Microbial Agents - 75,000 (nasty bugs)
Toxic Agents - 55,000 (sippin the ol' bleach bottle)
Motor Vehicle Crashes - 26,347 (more than murders)
Adverse Reactions to Prescription Drugs - 32,000 (didn't pay attention to the warnings)
Suicide - 30,622 (still more than murders)
Incidents Involving Firearms - 29,000 (insert crazy redneck comment here)
Homicide - 20,308 (not bad, number 10 on the list despite what the media would have you believe)
Sexual Behaviors - 20,000 (ok, I don't even want to know)
All Illicit Drug Use, Direct and Indirect - 17,000 (after all them warnings)
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Such As Aspirin - 7,600 (don't mix them, johnny)
Marijuana - 0 (yea, right)

What's the most interesting here ... the source says Tobacco deaths are 18.1% of the deaths in 2000.  435,000 / 18.1% = about 2.4million.   Add the above figures up ... you get about 1.2million.

Divide them and you get about 50%.  Even with statistical skew, there is some unknown killer out there ... my bet for the leading cause of death ... being alive?? *gasp*

actually these statistsics are wrong, top three leading causes of death are:

1. tobacco
2. chuck norris
3. Poor Diet and Physical Inactivity  and then the rest. guess it gets omitted because people are embarrassed.

sorry i could not not do it :-) but seriously, i wonder that the number for medicine side effects is so high. are ppl dumb or are medication sideeffects underestimated?

also i would doubt the numbers on tobacco deaths, it usually just one of several influences and won´t kill most people by itself. i guess the numbers get presented in a fashon that suits the no-smoking-nazis.
that´s not saying hooray for tobacco though, i ain´t smoking no sir.

I highly doubt War would make it into the statistics especially this War. it has been the cheapest in lives and material of any war we ever fought. Sorry to say thats not what some people want to hear. Strange how badly some political factions wish death and suffering on their own countrymen just to take back the White House.

only 2800 deaths in 3 yrs... that is very low for any war, compared to WW2, there was 2000 troops dead on D-day alone.

wow... america does need to get up its fat ass and excersize

Whew, that is a can of politics to open here....

RH - I think Horseman is saying that:

Out of the wars that have been fought, the current one has been the least costly. (If it's not over, how can we tally up how much it has cost us to compare?)

There is also sarcastically negative political statement in there at the end, but I remain neutral on the matter.

On topic - there hasn't been a war in the US in a while, so I'm not sure if "war" is admissable to this statistic.

I'd believe that a couple of the causes could be generalized into a "Lifestyle" catergory.  Some people out there are vying between several of these causes at once to see which one gets 'em first.

I strongly disagree with the second one you have there because cyborg_ninja-117 killed the Norris before he could become one of the Leading Causes of death in the U.S so technically he has saved humanity from a very serious villain xD
And for that I thank you

I thought the number one killer in the world is death?

I saw it in a movie once, so it must be true.

I wish you would just swear. No one is going to get upset with you, and it makes for some very confusing reading.

So, what kills the rest of the people in the US?

That's people trying out all them positions shown in the kama sutra and breaking their necks because they have poor balance. Some1 should really add a health hazard warning to that book.
