Ok, the other thread about murders in the US got me wondering ... so here are more statistics about death causes in the US. Here's a snapsnot at the year 2000:
Tobacco - 435,000 (big surprise)
Poor Diet and Physical Inactivity - 365,000 (interesting)
Alcohol - 85,000 (mmmm beer)
Microbial Agents - 75,000 (nasty bugs)
Toxic Agents - 55,000 (sippin the ol' bleach bottle)
Motor Vehicle Crashes - 26,347 (more than murders)
Adverse Reactions to Prescription Drugs - 32,000 (didn't pay attention to the warnings)
Suicide - 30,622 (still more than murders)
Incidents Involving Firearms - 29,000 (insert crazy redneck comment here)
Homicide - 20,308 (not bad, number 10 on the list despite what the media would have you believe)
Sexual Behaviors - 20,000 (ok, I don't even want to know)
All Illicit Drug Use, Direct and Indirect - 17,000 (after all them warnings)
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Such As Aspirin - 7,600 (don't mix them, johnny)
Marijuana - 0 (yea, right)
What's the most interesting here ... the source says Tobacco deaths are 18.1% of the deaths in 2000. 435,000 / 18.1% = about 2.4million. Add the above figures up ... you get about 1.2million.
Divide them and you get about 50%. Even with statistical skew, there is some unknown killer out there ... my bet for the leading cause of death ... being alive?? *gasp*
