This is a newer video about TROHPY from it's manufacturer.

This is a very interesting topic, but this is in the wrong forum.

It's a type of laser is my best guess. [Watch the FOX news report]

It heats the tip of the incoming missle to either detonation or destroys the detonator, causing the rocket to thud against the hull.

True, they're smart but not very creative.

In other words, how many movies have there been where missles get shot out of the sky by lasers?

One of em just took it seriously.

loving it....but right now, we need that on choppers more than tanks.... and humans, for bullets. im thinking magnet. makes bullets positives, vests negatives.

Im going to say that that thing uses frequencys to destroy the payload/propulsion wonder what would happen if you threw a rock at the tank with one of those things, BANG! The rock just explodes!

Thats what i thought, i'd heard of the american miliary expermenting with anti-rocket laser technology. They managed to develop a working prototype and last i heard it was being put on trials as of jan 06.
It was a large sphere with one hole in it, guessing that there were mirrors that reflect and intensify the beam. It was being tested on a destroyer, due to its large size it wouldnt really work for a tank or smaller vehicle. Also it said that it took almost a second for the beam to cause detonation which wouldnt be very effective for general combat.

Anyway, the TROPHY A.P.S.- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TROPHY_Act … ion_System

"The launchers fire the neutralizing agents which are usually small metal pellets like shotgun shot."

There ya go

and heres the fox news story- http://media2.foxnews.com/040606/040606 … in_300.swf

I didn't think we would ever come out with force field tech and here it is.  I'm sure it's too expensive to be put into major use though.

It's not a forcefield, unfortunately.  As asbad says, the system basically sprays the incoming missile/rocket with a hail of small projectiles, shredding it or causing it to detonate early.  I'd guess it's something like a cross between a firehose and a shotgun...

The genius part of this thing, assuming they manage to get it working perfectly, is the systems ability to detect and target incoming projectiles fast enough to react to them.

Anyway, very cool stuff.

Is this not a rip off of reactive armor?

pretty cool video and invention....but im curious..with this shield on...will the tank be able to fire out of it?  And will troops be able to walk through it while it is activated without being injured or......well.....melted lol?

haha good point. Would be quite funny if it even stopped projectiles from leaving the vehicle. But no, it has a pretty sophisticated computer that calculates the tradjectory of incoming projectiles and im sure it would be able to tell the diff.

As for troops....   melting. Well its not like some futuristic 'force shield'. I thought about the fact that troops often use armor vehicles for cover while moving. If a missile was fired at the vehicle and the A.P.S. system destroyed the incoming projectile, well wouldnt it be in the same area as troops?
The makers claimed that there was something of only 1% chance of troop injury from it, but i dont see how.....   A big explosion + the 'shot' from the A.P.S., someones bound to be injured.
