there is definately a strong regard for the safety of our soldiers in the field.
There comes a time when the respect for life on a larger scale has to directly lead to a seeming lack of respect for life on a relatively smaller scale. Malthusian Theory: People reproduce geometrically while resources reproduce arithmatically. Stated another way, two people have two kids who have two kids, etc etc ... exponential growth. If you plant 2 bean seeds, you get two bean plants. Furthermore, to continue the WWII references, lebensraum takes up space which could have been needed for the cultivation of resources. The more lebensraum required, the less space available to feed said people. They are counter productive.
As humanity is at the top of its food chain, we will always have to rely on war, disease, and attrition to keep our population in check else we grow ourselves to death. This is until technology exists to colonize other planets with sufficient ease to provide enough population movement OFF of this rock as opposed to establishing a colony elsewhere which will ultimately end up just like Earth is now ... which any colony would anyway. We are very much like a parasite. George Carlin said it best, "In the end, the Earth will just shrug us off like a bad cold."
