LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) -- Bolivia's leftist president has defended his decision to nationalize the country's natural gas reserves despite objections from foreign governments and energy companies, saying Bolivia is seeking "partners, not owners" to help harvest its natural resources.

President Evo Morales also said he would attend a summit Thursday with the presidents of Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela to discuss Monday's nationalization announcement, which has rattled the region and raised fears it could drive petroleum companies out of South America's poorest nation.

Finally some "poor" countries are trying to take over the big ass companies running their countries. I say its about time they wake up.

Problem is:

1) He sent troops in to make sure that this didn't happen;
2) The interests affected were, for the most part, not American (i.e. Exxon isn't a big investor in Bolivia).  They were mostly Brazilian, with a substantial European presence.

This isn't about Nationalisation as such...this is a forced renegotiation.  Don't get me wrong, I don't support his actions, they border on criminal, and it would have been just as easy to start the process with a discussion, instead of troops.  Nevertheless, he has given them time to submit renegotiation proposals, rather than simply confiscating the property outright.  The upshot is simply that Bolivia wants a bigger cut.
