Though I don't have any real evidence to back it up on hand, you'll find that counter is based completely on averages. Theres all this hype going around, and has been for a long, long time now, about the exponential growth of the human population and how we're going to over-populate the earth.
Theres been a lot of census' and investigations into our population growth by the WHO and other organizations that have come to the conclusion that we're almost at the end of the exponential incline of growth, and the birth/death ratio is seriously beginning to flatten out.
Think of it like a fish living in a fishtank, that and influenced control of birth such as the Chinese birth policies, but that's a whole different subject.
