Drone aircraft may prowl U.S. skies

Unmanned aerial vehicles have soared the skies of Afghanistan and Iraq for years, spotting enemy encampments, protecting military bases, and even launching missile attacks against suspected terrorists.

Now UAVs may be landing in the United States.

A House of Representatives panel on Wednesday heard testimony from police agencies that envision using UAVs for everything from border security to domestic surveillance high above American cities. Private companies also hope to use UAVs for tasks such as aerial photography and pipeline monitoring.

"We need additional technology to supplement manned aircraft surveillance and current ground assets to ensure more effective monitoring of United States territory," Michael Kostelnik, assistant commissioner at Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection Bureau, told the House Transportation subcommittee.

And the UAV's will fall under "Motherland Security"'s jurisdiction. They will observe everyone. I hate this shit. And don't give me that "if you aren't doing anything wrong" shit. TOO MUCH POWER!

What about the Fire Scout when that's ready?  They're already testing landing on moving carriers so it can't be far off now.  I imagine it would be as good as any other chopper, which is what they use now in cities anyway.  Only difference is that pilots cost lots of money and are limited to a certain number of flying hours.

Police helicopters are already circling the skies of US cities, monitoring potential crime. Same goes for fixed CC-TV cameras. So what's the difference to UAV ? I wouldn't mind that.

Then again, I don't live in the US...

If the government really wants footage of me running around my yard, naked as a baby, I could just send them hi def digital movies, with close ups and dramatic freeze frames.  I have no problem doing this what so ever.

What?  the government do something smart and use them where they would do the most good? I am cool with that. Property values would probably go up.  Then you get some tax " PAYERS " moving in. Turn things around there. It used to be a beautiful part of town. If Harlem could Turn around and make a come back, anyplace can.

If it takes a UAV, do it.

You could chain a cop to every citizen in oakland, and it wouldn't change a thing. The racial jab was a joke. I'm just laughing at all the cool ways our government is thinking up to keep us under their thumbs in the guise of "security".

honestly, if Americans weren't acting as irresponsible as we do these days, none of this would be necessary.....America is at an all time moral low

I dunno guys. You say it's against our right to privacy, but with a UAV the subject of obervation must be able to be seen from straight above, meaning that there isn't a roof above your head. And if there isn't a roof above your head then you're outside. Anything you do outside isn't considered private even if it's on your own land. You can still be seen.

Absolutley hilarious Burning Monkey...but yeah...I just read something about UAV's overflying the country and how there could be a huge problem of them getting in the way of other aircraft since they're not piloted they can't exactly respond to a air traffic controller...if ya ask me it's just gonna be another cluster fuck and screw up the US airspace even more than it already is...but I don't have a problem with them along the border...hell we're already stretched to thin down there...it'd help out a bunch...

"Oh no, we're not defending our borders! Instead, we're off fighting a war--wait! You're going to put UAV's on American borders? They're going to spy on criminals for the cops, and report their position? NOOOOO!"

What's the big deal. The government can already see shit from space.

But if you shoot down a UAV, be prepared to pay the cost of replacing it.
