World peace through common goals?

As far as the worlds religions (and groups of nonreligious people eg. Athiests) go, do you see ANY common ground? I do; Islam, Christianity, everyone seems to like helping the needy and poor. Many passages of the bible encourage it, it is one of the five pillars of Islam and there are many secular organisations devoted to this broad idea.

Do you think the ideal of world peace is (eventually) possibly through the pursuit of common goals?

No country-hatred please.

I would really like to think that it would be possible, but then I watch the news and realize that this will never happen due to things like greed, and intolerance. Rather unfortunate.

It's a nice idea, but it will never happen. The differences in religions and general views of life would create conflict among these groups in how exactly to help the "needy" people that they are supposed to be helping.

I would really, really like to say peace is possible. The only way peace is possible, is when all humans are gone. Given the opportunity, mankind will find a way to fight and kill for any reason.

Fighting has nothing to do with religion. People where fighting long before Christianity or Islam and it will continue to exist long into the future.

I generally agree with wannabe, though religion is used as more of a catalyst for fighting nowadays.

I do think its possible but its gonna take long time... nowadays news might be disturbing.. but dont forget that just a few decades ago the WWII was on Europe!! .. the mankin live for thousand of years in constant war.. that has become into less frecuent and less powerful wars.. nowadays cassualties in iraq are not even close to the millions soviet cassualties in WWII.. so I think its posible and its happening as long as the world stays in the diplomatic way... and making stronger political organizations as the UN, expanding democracy via fair trade treat with poorest countries and keeping away from power politicians that still beleave in a obsolete good vs evil war. War is no longer a good bussines.. its just for a minority but i dont think that most of the bussines groups all over the world see it with good eyes.. they have realize that its better bussines sell cheap things to poor people than to kill them.

it will never happen and its a stupid idea by trying to achieve.

I see it one of the World's globe clean ups against humans.
like now we see the dangerous Bird Flew H5N1. what do u think Mother nature is going to do? cleaning up the amount of birds? nah, she is taking some humans with it. if we werent prepared or aware of this it would be a second Spanish Flew. killing 40 Milion people.

So war is exactly the same we are build that way...if u piss of a country for example 9/11 - Afghanistan and now Iraq...we are in a small version of a WW3 . and that is going to be about religions i,m sure of that.
War's are a sort of a Civilazation clean up.

it always amazing me how theres people in the 2006 with minds of XII century.. some humans are just that way.. but thanks good.. there are others that use to think beyond a easy and simple macho thinking.. cos who can denied thats the easy way? .. you dont have to think that much ooo dick vs dick we solve the problem

The only way I can see the entire world uniting under one roof would be the rise of a common enemy bent on world domination or human genocide. Be it aliens, a country with nukes that no longer gives a shit, or whatever. The enemy of my enemy is my friend...
