hell, I lived on highway 1 for a couple months.  That hospital about 7 klicks north of Baghdad.  I guess it is a Brigade HQ now, all the work we put into it.  I was a TOC geek anyway.

Oh, I think I was confusing the M16A4 (image below) with the SCAR's. Sorry - didn't know that they came with a handle under the barrel.

It could have been an M16A4, but it may instead have been an M4 SOPMOD (Special Operations Peculiar Modification).  They are fitted with Pictinny rail along the length of the barrel, onto which accessories can be attached.  Among these accessories are a reactive (red-dot) scope and a foregrip handle.  A couple weeks back my friend returned from Iraq and recalled that although his standard weapon while in bivouac was a regular M16A2, in the field he was given an M4 SOPMOD (as his MOS was Intelligence, combat was not his primary concern).

Edit: Here's a SOPMOD M4 complete with descriptions of most specialized components:

Yes! That's exactly what it looked like, it was smaller and appeared slimmer than an M16! Thanks, Cap!
