I just wanted to ask you people who have served/are serving in Iraq about the weapons currently in use by the US forces. I must admit that as late as 2003 - 2004 I had this rather antiquated picture that all the US troops (I'm talking about your ordinary "grunts" here) use M-16's or M-4's, kinda like they did in Vietnam. However, after watching countless hours of news footage, I noticed some rather strange-looking (to someone used to the good ol' M-16 made famous by countless Vietnam movies) new guns in the hands of US infantry, and later on to my surprise stumbled on them in BF2. So my question is, does infantry generally use SCAR-L's or H's in day to day situations or what? What is the basic weapon issued by the US military for deployment abroad?

Oh, and I guess answers by anybody knowledgable on this matter are welcome, not just the people that have served in Iraq...

Oh... So the good old stuff is still in use, eh? Anyway, I saw some weird guns with handles under the barrel just like SCAR's have, in news fotage... Perhaps the troops in question were a part of some special unit then.

and the At-4 and javelin, but rarely used.  No iraqi tanks to crush anymore.  Javelin detroys all but AT-4 mildly succesful against getting fuckers behind walls and underneath windows.  If it dont kill him, he gonna be scare might strong

Oh, I think I was confusing the M16A4 (image below) with the SCAR's. Sorry - didn't know that they came with a handle under the barrel.

memories... it doesnt come with the pistol grip but it comes with a kick ass rail mounting system, you could pretty much attach anything to it pretty much to help you kill better.  That sight thats mounted replaces the iron sights that are standard on the mi16 but in the a4 there detachable, but you still gotta install trhe sight yourself.

Be advised, that the current M-16 is a far cry from the POS that was introduced in Vietnam.  The first M-16s had numerous problems with ammunition and jamming etc.  The ammunition problem was fixed and all of the issues with the weapon itself have been addressed (I believe the latest mod of the M-16 is the A4 - but the most numerous is the A2 - which dealt with the most serious problems).  What you have now in the M-16s and M-4s is a very good weapon system, with not nearly as many problems as it had when it was first introduced.  When you hear people trash talk the M-16 and its derivatives, they are talking about the original weapon, and the bad reputation it made for itself - not the mature current version which is quite good.

I understand that some members of Military Shooting teams have problems with the SCAR which could hold it up, if not knock it out, as a replacement for the M-16.  This is just hearsay (although from the mouth of a competetive military shooter) and not official.  I have never fired one myself

Don't forget the M-203 grenade launcher attachment that many of you love!

Who needs small arms? Just for for the good ol' M-198 howitzer. No town, no fuss! Of course, they're being replaced by the M-777's...

Ok, the guy talking about the (X)M8, the project's RFP (Request for Proposal) has currently been binned by the army for the time being. Regarding the M14s, the USMC use the M21 DMR which is a semi only M14 that has a McMillan DMR stock. M14s are still awesome for the Designated Marksman Role. Hell, if the army is still issuing a design that originated in 1965 (M16 series) than the M14 is good to go as well (since it has had several improvements over time as well).

your right cant forget about the m-203 but you know what, they re-issued the good ole thumper M-79 to us right before we went to Iraq and mossberg 12 gauge.....yeah thats it i think but I cant forget about my bushmaster 25mm.  I was mechanized.  and the M231 port firing weapon too, fastest rate of fire in our arsenal for small arms.  You gotta fire it wearing some heating mittens and the magazine will be expent in like 2 seconds.  Spray and pray

I saw a few M-79's with the grunts while I was in Iraq. Us gun-rocks (artillery) kept the 203. I guess someone higher up decided it wasn't necessary, seeing that my battery alone had 5 50 cals, 4 Mk-19's, 8 SAWs and 5 240G's. Oh, and 6 155mm M-198 howitzers. I guess a singular loading 40mm grenade launcher is a bit useless after all that...

The SCAR, both 5.56 and 7.62 are finished, FN had those a year ago.  The only development now is field report modifications. The OICW is just a paperweight now, it was cancelled before the XM8.  The XM8 was cancelled recently over the fairness of the weapons competition.  AFAIK, the US alloted a little over $10 mil to by 10K XM8's, but they cancelled it.  OICW was a joke from the beginning, high school kids loved it, but it's just too impractical in terms of weight, cost, and effectiveness.

A quick google search and you'll probably find all this.  The US is stuck with the M16 for the foreseeable future.

gotta love a fellow redleg, even if he IS a leatherneck!  WE were using M109A6s.  Heavy all the way!  Never walk when you can ride.

Oh, and most units operating in urban areas detached theri Mk-19s and put on extra M2 .50 cals.  The problem was that the grenades had a 50 meter arming distance, so they just made for really BIG bullets that could blow up, or not, any time after you shot.  And when they DID explode in town, there might be... other casualties.

Where did we get the extra M2s?  We dug them up in TAJI, an Iraqi airbase northwest of Baghdad.  They were buried, still in cosmoline.  US issue M2 HB Machineguns, with Kingdom of Jordan stamps on them from when we sold them to Jordan.  How they turned up unopened in Iraq?  Feel free to speculate.
