The AP has released a video showing FEMA director Michael Brown briefing Bush about the dangers rising from Katrina.  The briefing happened a day before the hurricane hit, and it occurred as a result of a week-long email exchange between FEMA and the government.

Bush merely says at the end of the video that "We are fully prepared."  He wasn't engaged in the conversation, and just sat there with the same docile look on his face that he had when he was informed about the 9/11 attacks.

Four days after Katrina hit, Bush claims to have had no knowledge about the aid shortcomings, nor about how much damage had been done.  He's been caught in a lie, and he and Chertoff lose major credibility points while Brown has now proven to have been the least responsible of the Katrina aid blunders.

What I don't get, is when they know a hurricane is coming that might cause damage, why don't they set up the relief effort somewhere just north of the hurricane zone.  As soon as the hurricane blows through, move in for quick and effective relief.  The fact of the matter is, the people in New Orleans and the whole southern coastal area were warned about Katrina but they chose to stay.  Oops, their bad.

yeah, THE DAY BEFORE.  you can only do so much when you have a day's notice.  mobilizing the military to help out takes lots of time.

with regard to Bush not reacting to the 9-11 news, what was he supposed to do?  stand up and scream about it in front of all those little kids, when no one really new for sure what was going on?  my reaction would have been the same too.  he got notified as each plane hit so when the first one hit it wasnt a terrorist attack yet.  and what was he supposed to do anyway?  change into his costume and fly to NY and catch the planes in mid-air?  come on folks.

Ok...the DAY BEFORE, he told the FEMA people that he would help out in any way possible.  Five days later, he claims to have had no briefing nor knowledge about the extent of the damage caused by Katrina!  THAT'S the topic.

Bush KNEW about it all, and SAID he'd do something about it, and then denied he knew anything about it a few days later.  What's not being understood here?

This topic is very subjective.  lets look at it this way.  Bush was informed that Katrina was going to be a very big storm.  This statement was a "prediction" seeing as how as of this time in this day in age we really can't 100% accurately gauge the weather.  If you were in his shoes and were told "one day in advance" that there is a very big storm coming and that your agency leaders with whom you must put trust into to run thier angencies told you that they were prepared what would YOU do?  The gov. was prepared for the types of storms that we have always had.  Katrina blew in and top the charts and then some.  Like I said, we can only "predict" a level of a storm, Kartina came and put a smack down on N.O..  Another unforscene aspect were the levies breaking and flooding the districts.  It was said that it "might" happen and seeing as how they have stood up to the type of storm that Katrina was "predicted" to be and not what it became they concentrated on other issues more. Now, I will say that they Gov. and the state were caught with thier panties down and Katrina gave them and all the unfortunate residents a good rimming.  I will be honost here, I do think that Bush has been screwing up a lot lately but I will defend him on this topic and ttry to put yourself in his shoes and look at the BIG picture and you can see that he did not lie but that everyone was "unprepaired".

If I were in his shoes, I wouldn't have tried to cover up his inability to muster the proper aid necessary with a bold-faced lie.

How can you say he didn't lie?  Did you not watch the video?  Have you not paid any attention whatsoever to the media and his press reports?  It's not a matter of being prepared or not, it's the FACT that he'd been briefed by FEMA, and then a few days later said he had never been briefed...

Typical Politician, in that he says whatever will get him out of hot water at the time. Nothing new there.

Is there any surprise the Federal Government (not just the President), totally screwed this one up?

Not really, Erkut...just moderately annoying that we have been spending tax money on a Homeland Security department which has proven absolutely useless in a direct time of need...

So, US-Americans must be stupid to be lied at such level... I wonder why nobody remembers NIXON, as a example for a BAD GUY US PRESIDENT WHO LIES.
Won´t some chick in the white house just give Georg W. a BLOWJOB, so Keneth Star can chase him into jail, where this war-criminal should belong to.
But I guess, the Nürnberg-Trials remain a singularity in history... ( The Nazis were accused and mostly judged of the cause they did an ATTACK-WAR. No Nazi in Nürnberg was accused and judged of the Holocaust. These Accusations were made later, by Israel mostly,
here in Germany a lot of Nazi-Bastards got away without a Trial, which I personally regrett.)
Bush is a lier (-> "Mission Accomplished" was a stupid lie, as U can see on the daily News, the mission is NOT accomplished.), and who says other lies, too.

Yes, Bush should have waved his magic wand, and New Orleans would be saved.  Bullshit, this topic is shwag.

Mayor Ray Nagen is the ultimate meathead here, as well the Democrat Governor that runs Louisiana.  The preperation should have been done at the state level, which it wasnt.

All i know is this:  If I live in a town that is 6 feet below sealevel, and you are surrounded by water on 3 sides, I AM GETTING THE FUCK OUTTA TOWN WHEN A HURRICANE COMES.  Gay Ray Nagen wasnt event competent enough to get the hundreds of school busses in order to cart off the folks that had no car to get out of the area.  Instead, the school busses were left in the parking lots, only to be left in 10' of water.

That must be Bush's fault, right?  If it goes wrong, it must be on him every time.  Blasphemy.  I am sick of these stupid ass posts about how Bush did this or didnt do that.  This Katrina crap is on all the people in the area that were told to evacuate, and didnt.  I dont have much sympathy for those folks.  Right now, they are getting ATM cards to with free money on them, and instead of bettering their situations, they are spending their money at the Titty bar.  Idiots.

It is not Bush's fault that Katrina hit and caused the devastation that it did.  It is not his fault that the recovery operation took a few days to get set up.  It IS the fault of the local government.  They are the people that know what resources they have, and are familiar with the roads/traffic patterns of the area.  They are the turd sandwiches that let those people down.

On a side note, Mayor Gay Ray Nagen said he wants to have a "chocolate city" in New Orleans.  What kinda half racist bullshit is that?  If I were mayor of New Orleans and I said that I wanted a "vanilla city", which basically implies that I dont want the blacks to come back, I would be beheaded in the press!!!!!  No one seems to care about this idiot making a statement like that.  This is why:

THE PRESS IS A BUNCH OF LIBERAL BAFOONS THAT WILL DO ANYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO UNDERMINE THE REPUBLICANS.  THEY PUSH THEIR GARBAGE AGENDA BY SLANTING ALL NEWS STORIES TO FIT THEIR OPINIONS.  THIS KATRINA STUFF IS NO DIFFERENT.  SOSDD.

Yep, first that Evil® George W. Bush flew those airplanes into the WTC, now he whipped up a hurricane to take out New Orleans, boy, somebody needs to do something about him!

What next, maybe he'll create a global earthquake, or maybe he'll wave his hand and knock the earth of it's axis.

One day in advance is plenty of time for a military response by the way. The United States military operational readiness, even with Iraq allows for mobilization within 36 hours anywhere in the world. My two cents... Bush has bigger lies to fry, like, the fact that he proposed the Iraq war to cost only 1.7 billion dollars and how we are now exceeding the 250 billion dollar mark. His lack of credibility leads me to believe he knew more about 9/11 then has leaked to the general public, and Cheney's relationship with Middle Eastern Oil companies is also pretty suspicious if you ask me. The job of the president is to protect, all this one has done is made us vulnerable.

I read a partial transcript.

President Bush's comments 4 days after Katrina, "I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees."  You would have to define *is* in this situation...   Was there a chance the levees could break... yes.  Was the probability of them breaching 1.0 ... no.  Just like Clinton got off with the definition of 'is' so will Bush.

Does 36 hours apply to the National Guard?  They are the ones the Governor calls in... not the active military.

Order of government:
City, state, then federal.

What should have happened:
President should not have waited for the governor to request help.  Governor should have had the National Guard in the next day.  Nagin should have evacuated with the school buses 2 days before the scheduled land fall.  But hind-sight is 20/20.

Fault lies to Nagin and Blanco first.  Then FEMA and probably Bush for appointing Brown.

3 points I'd like to bring up.
1.  The press is LIBERAL?????  Give me a break.  The mainstream press is owned, printed, and distributed by a conservative, stictly business-oriented, and (like the current administration) only tells people what they and their advertisers think people want to hear.  It's always the old saw: because I don't like what the press is telling me, it must be liberal.  The few times it does support the republicans, it's "they're telling me the truth". . .  Fox is just the more extreme of the mainstream conservative, me-first, fuck anyone who acts/talks/thinks differently from me CONSERVATIVE press.
2.  Bush is a tool.  Impeaching him will do no good.  Is nobody able to perceive that the guy has NO FUCKING CLUE as to what is going on?  His only strength is that he can be easily led by people (like Cheney) who know what power is, and how to use it.
3.  Clinton.  Monica.  WHO REALLY GIVES A DAMN that he got a blowjob?  Jesus, anyone in the corporate world is getting this regularly.  The guy had a chick go down on him, and somehow that is some huge moral dilemma, we should impeach the lying bastard and all that shit.  The only person who should/could be really worried about that is Hillary.  NOT US.  Personally, I'm much more worried about an idiot in the white house, elected with like 20% of the populations direct assent, running around, attacking everyone in sight, abrogating all international commitments, and making his goddam friends rich.  The cynical homeland shit just brings it home for me.
Well that's my rant for now.  I'm ready for the personal attacks, unfounded by any logic, that are sure to follow.
