I think the Olympics mean less if you're from a country that generally does well. I imagine every time someone from Chad wins a bronze medal the reaction is way more positive than someone from the US getting a gold. When you have only a few athletes who have a chance it's a little more exciting.

Edit: I didn't actually realise this but apparently Chad has never won any medals so I imagine the reaction would be quite significant.
