What causes FPS to drop?

Around october when BF3 first came out I could record with fraps around 80FPS ultra settings with SLI'd 460SE's. After awhile i've noticed decreased FPS dropping to 30fps while on medium and recording with fraps. So i did a wipe of everything reinstalled w7 and tried again with propper drivers and everything. Now I can only record 30-60 fps on HIGH in BF3. I don't think overheating is a cause because I have several fans and my PC is well ventilated. I've also cleaned it out probably twice since then. Any Idea's?

Are you noticing this primarily on B2K maps versus vanilla BF3 maps, or is it the same regardless?

All of the B2K maps have consistently lower FPS for me: lows in the upper 40s/low 50s on B2K maps, versus lows in the 60fps range on the stock maps, at 1080p ultra settings. (with an i7 @ 4.1 ghz, 6gb ddr3 @1800, SSD, and GTX 580 1.5gb that's slightly OC'd)

All maps do it.

I dont have antivirus nor a firewall

I've got lots of fans and plenty of room for them to breathe.

I'm having the same problem. Use to record just fine, frames dropped a little when fraps was going but the game was still smooth.

Now it has trouble. Studders really bad while the fps counter still says 50-60fps. Nothing is overheating, harddrive is 80% free.
