My friend might buy this this to replace his shitty Wifi Link 1000.

I'm wondering if the laptop's standard antenna will be able to use the 5GHz bandwidth or if it'll only be able to use the 2.4GHz bandwidth still with those antennas.  I'm pretty sure that would it be able to do it without different antennas but I just want to know for sure.

You connect the antenna onto the tiny UFL connectors on the top

If the laptop has a UFL connector going to the antenna you should be able to connect it and it should be ok, they're quite fiddly to connect so try not to damage it

I'm not sure how antennas connect inside laptops though so you might want to open it and check first before you buy it

The antennas should work fine. The old card has 2 antennas, the new one 3. Not sure how It'll work with only 2 connected. Maybe there's a third one in the laptop but not connected to anything (that's how it is with my Lenovo R500).

He'll obviously also need a 5GHz AP. 5GHz is even worse at punching through walls in my experience.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you would just hook up two if it's a laptop that only has two antennas like his no doubt would, I don't think there's a lot of laptops out yet that support triple-antenna 450Mbps.  It's a really nice card though and it's going into an $800 Dell XPS so I figure he might as well get the best if possible but I was telling him about the little benefit and he just wanted to be sure if it would work the way that I thought it was.

I may or may not have replaced one before, I can't remember, but I should be able to figure it out anywayt.  Btw, stay away from Intel Wifi Link 1000 cards, they suck, that's why I even looked in the first place, he can only connect to one router ever and then it'll get a "Limited Connection" on everything else after that, this is a replacement for another one that did the same thing and it also got rotten reviews for doing something similar on Newegg.  Just a heads up
