lets put game designers that release broken games on a pedestal, though, i agree. those crazy east-european slavs are the high-brow of gaming culture, putting out games that require 10gb's of custom created mods to even work properly. phenomenal. the future of game design.

both games crashed often for me. maybe you guys are trying too hard to like it, against the facts, i.e. that it crashes a lot and is a buggy POS.

as someone who actually has played the game, on several different hardware/OS setups, on both steam and retail, on every patch version, I know that it's a perfectly stable game

on release - i.e years before either of you played it - it was buggy. Now it's not

spare us from the endless wasted pages of you arguing how every single game is shit. there comes a point where you need to stop whining

and all i'm saying is good riddance, couldn't have made games that were that amazing if they couldn't even stay afloat as a business

just over a thousand followers on twitter, too. paris hilton has more interest from the gaming industry.

I would rather put you on the opposite end of the scale and say the same

It's as if you think the OP somehow justifies your opinion

'see guys, see, I told you!!!'

the STALKER series sold millions, blew every financial expectation/sales projection out of the water

a scrappy ukranian dev team not having a blazingly popular english twitter feed.. oh no

if they "blew every financial expectation out of the water" then why are they too broke to make a follow-up? doesn't make much sense to me.

Yeah STALKER was buggy and not too stable, but I still loved that game. One of the best PC games I've played, and I never bothered with mods. It says a lot about the game that even with all its problems (which had minimal effect on gameplay), it was still enjoyed by so many people.

Making good games has no correlation with being a good business. Studios that make a lot of money can fail and studios that make a small amount can continue on, way more too it that "lol stalkers a bad game".

Guess what, Ion Storm folded and they made Deus Ex. Must have been a shit game!!!!

all i'm saying is you have to be pretty dumb as a business to make a big-selling game and still go bust. and many people found stalker shit. it adds up.

As of September 2008, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has sold 2 million copies worldwide. GSC Game World CEO Sergiy Grygorovych has said "We are very pleased that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. became so popular among players from all over the world. Financial success will allow us to develop S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in different directions as a brand."
Horrible management is the cause of GSC's death, not the popularity of Stalker.

Not quite. In the context of the post before that he says that can't be why, it must be because nobody bought it because "many people found stalker shit."

Yeah good riddance to a developer that made a series that was designed for exclusively for PCs and is unique and tried something new and different in an age when everyone just makes CoD clone console ports that I also complain endlessly about.

We don't need their kind in this industry, because their game had bugs in at release and can be quite hard to get into! Good riddance to the lot of them because I don't understand why other people like it.

noble intentions... shit results. cya. i don't care about that rockpapershotgun essay because it's all idealism - celebrating the 'ideals' and 'intentions' of the company and the game ethos. but the gameplay experience was nowhere near as great as the article makes out. stalker for me has the 'EVE online' effect: amazing to read about, a great concept, applaudable design/team.... but then when you play it, it is fucking shit. i literally couldn't be more uninterested in a game. byeeeeee. your loss, not mine.

So why not say something like "It's a shame they're gone because while Stalker had good ideas and intentions, the actual implementation wasn't very good. Now that they're gone we won't see if they could have lived up to their ideas in future games."

I don't understand the thinking behind being happy that a developer is dead, especially one that makes original and interesting games.

cause i'm not going to celebrate a game that didn't deliver, am i? OH WELL DONE GUYS YOU REALLY INTENDED TO DO SO MUCH BUT DIDN'T ACHIEVE ANY OF IT BUT WELL DONE FOR TRYING PLEASE HAVE MY MONEY AND ADULATION. no. it's like saying someone set out to write a masterpiece and ended up smearing their shit on paper for 5 pages and binding it in cardboard. OH BUT WELL DONE YOUR AIMS WERE SO EXCELLENT. it doesn't work like that. stalker was terminally unplayable, buggy, and most of all just fucking boring for me. the voice acting and everything that was meant to 'immerse' you in this supposedly 'deep' and 'intricate' RPG world was corny and fucking awfully done, spoiling all chance of suspending disbelief. thus it was not a good game. i'm not going to throw awards at developers for their imaginary aims that were never realized. that's like giving david lynch's 'dune' a fucking oscar.
