Here's a synopsis though, if you'd like. Peter the Great, the man that attempted to force the Russian people to look west instead of inward, spent much of his life fighting the Swedes under Charles XII. He kicked them out of the Baltic, founded St Petersburg using Dutch architects, and fought unsuccessfully against the Ottoman Empire. In his youth, he spent time as a shipbuilder in the Netherlands in order to bring that knowledge home and found the Russian Navy. He admired Louis XIV and France, but his offspring tended to admire the Prussians in Berlin. Either way, his admission of so many foreigners into the Russian empire was his attempt to westernize the nation, as was his founding of St Petersburg and the Russian Academy located there which drew mathematicians from all over Europe to work, the Laplaces (and Euler) from Switzerland being the most famous.
