metaphysics at a semi-rigorous, mathematical level has taken off in the last century. godel, turing and others set the foundations, and since then there has been some freaky, freaky shit come out that even the most hardcore empiricist has to stop and think "hmm..."

A lot of mathematical concepts and constructs do draw inspiration from the world around us (Fibonacci sequence for example). The statement wasn't that it would be replicated EXACTLY the same, it is saying that because science is based upon fact and proof it would be rebuilt towards the same knowledge, unlike religion, which is based upon fables thought to be as actual happenings.
Fibonnaci sequence has nothing to do with the natural world. It's a mathematical toy. Dan Brown made it famous because it sounded cool.
I know about it because I studied it when I was 12, not because of an author.

Shut up, Jaekus. Jay is very well read. In a few post he will start dropping Hegel's metaphysics on you.

The basic practices of math and science were and are employed by all humans, through all the ages of men. To test, experiment, and count, and to realize patterns is the natural way for us. However, I do not think that our current body of scientific knowledge would be recreated as it is should it somehow be lost.

For millions of years our ancestors have utilized the scientific method to approach the world and to know the cosmos. Cultures have had highly variant bodies of knowledge, and some had even attained a complexity and confidence that we find ourselves within today. The universe/life is obviously mysterious and stretches far beyond what we can say we know. It took western civilization a couple of thousand years of studying the material world to understand that it is in fact immaterial and that we and everything around us is composed of energy. Other systems of knowledge have been built up in the opposite manner, beginning with the assumption or the knowledge that the universe we can look at and we ourselves are illusory. So, how did past cultures come to these conclusions that we can say deal in some truth if they didn't have physics and high powered optics to understand the cosmos and know of atoms and their parts?

I was speaking generally of the tradition of science that we presently utilize in the first world. Now that that is clarified you may continue reading my statement.

Obviously the geographical significance of the word Western is less relevant today.

what you call "science of western civilization" was affected so much by the rest of the world over the course of its development that today its totally non-existent as a separate "tradition". arabs invented algebra, a slav invented periodic table of elements, others contributed so much that crediting modern science and its discoveries to "western civilization" would be much like mormons claiming that christianity is american - ridiculous.

Super cool story. Why are you stating obvious and known things? This has nothing to do with my original statement.

because for the better part of the time period when so called "modern science" existed - which is 200 to 250 past years - there's been no such thing as "western civilization", let alone its "tradition of science" which never existed in the first place. that's a pretty obvious thing that you fail to grasp for some reason. "that's what we utilize in the first world" you say? well, you know what, sherlock, most others use - and participated in the development of - that same stuff.

re-phrasing your original statement, "it took human civilization, not any one single branch of it, a couple of thousand years of studying the material world to understand that it is in fact immaterial and that we and everything around us is composed of energy."

Technological innovation in the past 400+ years has come overwhelmingly from western European countries and their spawn.

Shater, I do realize what you are saying about western civilization, and I agreed with you. Get past it and address my original statement or don't bother commenting.

Dunno why shahter gets bent out of shape when the word western is used. Russia was considered part of 'the west' from the time of peter the great up to the bolsheviks. Euler did a ton of good work while living in st petersburg.
