The other day, I was reading Hitchens book Arguably, and thought of Uzique.

https://i.imgur.com/veAbs.jpg

Had forgotten about that until this morning, when I saw the above picture on Reddit captioned with "How I feel getting a degree in Art must feel like"

I wouldn't worry about Uzique going on the dole.
Once he figures out that a degree in Art is only good for getting laid, he'll fall back on his wit, ego, and sarcasm.
He'll have a fine career in management or sales.

Hi guys!!!! First of all, let me just say this: cute. Really cute that you are still coming here to bump an old dusty thread (itself a joke because of Dilbert’s colossal misunderstanding and ineptitude) to reminiscence about me, your pal, Uzique. I just knew that I’d leave a big me-shaped hole in the fabric of this place when I so heartlessly tore myself away from the big ‘ole reel of endlessly spooling, prevaricating cotton-mouthed bullshit. If only I had realised at the time just how big the shock and trauma would be, I’d have surely had the consideration and foresight beforehand to set-up an official helpline for those feeling lost and distressed after my final bow, my exit stage left. Since I feel so bad for all of you that clearly haven’t passed through all of the appropriate stages of grief and dealt with it yet, here is a one-time charity post for all of you (shout out to my boy ‘Dave’ aka AussieReaper, too, who seems to have had me on his mind an awful lot lately over these past few months, if his post-mentions are anything to go by…):

Okay, well, first-up, let’s address the unfortunate and rather inconvenient little technical taxonomies surrounding this whole ‘Art’ degree thing – something that an apparently well-educated and astute D&ST debate hero clearly hasn’t understood very well in its cross-Atlantic translation. I don’t do an Art degree. My course is classed as a Humanities degree, and in the traditional hierarchy of University subjects it is ranked very highly in terms of intellectual rigor, academic esteem and personal merit. More people go into the legal profession over here from English Literature, Philosophy and Classics backgrounds than those who did a Law degree. In fact, nearly four times as many. Isn’t that an awkward little factum for you Americans to deal with? An ‘Art’ degree involves Fine Art, or Art History, or Curating, or actual forms of illustration, painting, and design. I didn’t do an art degree because I didn’t want a career in holding the canapés and champagne at exhibition openings featuring such luminous contemporary art-work as ‘Key hangs by piece of string from blank wall, 2012’. English Literature is actually an example of a classical subject taken at a traditional (read: worth its salt) University by those that end up going into public-service or the government: many senior politicians and public figures have classical educations doing the same Degree and course curriculum as myself (for e.g. the former Chief of UK police read English, not Law, as well as several judges at the US Supreme Court). I feel I’m reiterating a point I have made since 2008, at least, here: studying ‘English’ in the States seems to have a completely different value and set of connotations/implications than it does in the UK (I’m guessing that’s because the only place you can get a good academic education in English in the States is at a private and expensive ‘liberal arts’ college, which is for privileged people, who surely can’t be doing anything requiring any effort or intelligence…) However, it is a perfectly well-regarded course here (with the hierarchy-bound UK perhaps finding the wealthy ‘liberal arts’ stereotype preferable instead of risible…), and many of my class of ’11 are already well into lucrative and fulfilling careers, with nicely embossed business-cards and reservations at all the right and important places, and so on and so forth, etc.etc.

Secondly, let’s discuss my ‘life’, since it is of an obvious high concern to those here (a cursory search of bf2s for posts mentioning my name since my permaban reads like a long list of public encomiums that you’d more normally find at the state-funeral of a darling Prince or national treasure – I am truly honoured). It’s so heartwarming to know that some strangers still care about how I’m doing in the big, bad world of IRL even though I haven’t thought about them once. This forum really is like a big warm safety-blanket, and I really appreciate your concern. Dilbert, dearest Dilbert… can I just ask: are you stupid? Seeing as you know I’m doing a Master’s degree (on a rarely-granted full excellence scholarship, may I add, ho-ho!), why would I be filling out a dole form now? A Master’s lasts for 12 months. I’m surely not going to be trotting off to the job-centre for another 6 months! And you supposedly have a background in Math… but I digress. Don’t worry about me being a sponge on society, scrounging on benefits, as my affairs seem fairly well in order. I’m either going to go and teach in a nice, cushty and incredibly well paying private school in Korea for a year (to pay off my debts, which I’m sure you’ll be ever-so-proud of me for, for having the well-intentioned responsibility to take on by myself); or, instead, I’m going to take the jolly path and go on up to Oxford for a fully-funded PhD. I currently have three Professors - renowned internationally at the top of their fields - fully behind me and my application, which will certainly help me secure funding from Oxford (who have just received a significant boost to the numbers of scholarships they have for us Humanities students—not Art students, remember?). I will, possibly, putatively, be going in order to spend 3 years at one of the best graduate-only colleges in the world writing on American literature (amongst many other things), which I’m sure will annoy you Yanks to no end. But again, don’t worry about me filling out any benefit-forms, because it’s all fully paid for and fast-tracks me into a lucrative, cosy world of dons’ quarters, smoking jackets, port, and much late-night colloquy on philosophy, poetry and the great minds of the ages. I’ll also be eating up undergraduate females like some sort of tight lycra-panted speed-fiend at a roller-disco. Now I know all of you anti-intellectuals and ‘real men’ and pragmatists here at bf2s/d&st will surely recoil in horror at that image – where you ordinarily like your serious debate and philosophy to not exceed a pithy forum discussion and a link to reason.com – but! - do hang in here with me - it gets better! I’ll also be taking my internship offer up at one of the world’s most reputable music magazines this summer! Now isn’t that cool! Much like a certain Asian people and their propensity to wield absolute control over any natural disaster: I’ve got this shit on lock. Wit, ego, sarcasm… some of my many talents, yes, though admittedly only my minor ones. My real career ambition lies in the calling of the ivory-tower, and I’m actually really good at it. Honest.

It’s been pleasant catching up, and seeing the familiar names of all you funny guys that regularly take such a keen interest in my affairs. It really thaws the icy-core of my calculating cynical heart to know that there are a few 30-something guys out there so eagerly engaged with the career-path of a fresh-faced 22 year old. But, honestly now, don’t worry about me! I’m doing just fine. It is true that the quality of my life and mental acuity has dropped off dramatically now I can no longer discuss matters of severe importance in D&ST with you, and now I can no longer spare the time to look at .gifs of cats and pictures of Camm’s semi-naked, rotund torso… but I am coping. I am pulling through. I sincerely hope that you will, too, seek help to cope with the difficulties you are no-doubt (judging from this thread) struggling with on a daily basis in my absence. Please remember, after all, that I’m just one little man in this world, and what I’m up to and what I choose to do really isn’t important in the grand scheme of things and really shouldn’t bother you that much; your jokes and attention are both unfunny and more than a little weird. Nevertheless, I’ll be sure to drop by again in several months time, when hopefully I can post some smug shots of me having a great time in Asia, or otherwise looking very serious and severe indeed in a university study on my way to academic stardom. Ciao bella! Ciao bello! Exit, pursued by a care. [Act III, Scene III].

p.s. Congratulations to RDX for thinking he is in any position to criticize a member of the much-younger-generation when he’s spending his ‘mature’ adulthood reading Hitchens books and browsing Reddit for meme-quotable pictures. Great job. Pop some more Zoloft, papa, and head back over to the gun thread because I think someone there on the Internets is wrong about the projectile velocity of a hollow-tip .45 round exiting a threaded gun barrel at an upwards angle of 32.5 degrees whilst facing South-East in a 23kmh crosswind… whilst stood in an Alabama parking lot on a 95% humidity day in October (N.B. not on a leap year). Much like my familiarity with the great works of Western literature, and my intimate knowledge of post-structuralist theory, phenomenology and the philosophical thought of the likes of Deleuze/Guattari… I’m sure you’re just finding ways to apply your abstruse gun knowledge every day, for all the jobs.

p.p.s. Just to disclaim before this posts elicits such responses as “omg trolled into responding!!!!” or “lol look at how long that post is, he ”, let me just say that this has been hilarious to type, and an utter joy. Over the last few months I’ve been linked by bf2s friends via Xfire/Steam to so many little cheapshots and comments about me, which I am clearly in no capacity to, or of having any interest in replying to. I’ve rolled my eyes so many times at the odd, strange little digs that people still feel the need to make about me in this weird, greened-over social fish-tank in order to get some sort of ‘validation’ or ‘high-five’, despite the fact I’m clearly not around to read it. It has genuinely struck me as being both funny and baffling in equal measure. So it is truly my pleasure to reply in such length; it gives me a break from the merciless 40,000 words of end-term papers I am currently typing out like some sort of literary automaton. Adieu.

Well, he seems to be in better spirits.

Somewhere in there, I think he mentioned ditching it all to run away and seek fame, fortune, and spandex covered asses in a roller-derby league.

There was also something in there about an unfortunate encounter with a .45 wielding maniac in an Alabama parking lot, but I'm not sure where he was going with that...
