In my mind, I've always used the British spelling (grey) when talking about the color and assumed the American spelling (Gray) when talking about someone's name. However, I never saw anything wrong with mixing the two up (for the color) as long as your choice of British vs American spelling is consistent throughout a single paper.

I've always thought teachers and professors that give you a hard time about this kind of thing are missing the point entirely. English is English.

Voting 'grey,' despite the fact that I'm an American. To me it just feels more correct.
