No doubt. That's the "mission creep." The responsibility of nation-building was placed on the military instead of the State Dept and NGOs. That is a Rumsfeldian/neocon philosophical failure. The military wasn't/isn't trained or equipped for it--State and NGOs are. It was based on what they felt was a failure of the previous model in the Balkans. I think the Balkans worked out much better, in comparison.

Yeah, that's what I got out of it as well, don't know all that much about the Balkan conflict except for the massive failure that was Srebrenica and EU cooperation in the area.

Which I feel is again a problem within the coalition in Afghanistan. The independant EU nations don't have the budget to support a reasonable amount of troops, each of them having different ways of doing things, speaking different languages, all using different equipment, etc. One giant clusterfuck.

From what I read about the future of the EU's role within NATO they're more or less setting it up as some sort of a clean-up crew for the US, that idea won't go down well with anyone around here. Should just quit the whole battlegroup/merging idea and simply start a combined reaction force from scratch.

Think I'll have to wait for another 20 years for that to happen though stubborn lot here.

I don't want to get into a huge debate about the specifics however:

Going into Iraq specifically to remove Saddam, if thats true, would be a war crime.
Same for the Taliban in Afghanistan.

There are other ways to achieve these things, which the various parties didn't even attempt.
There are also other equally despotic and nasty regimes we do nothing about.

There was never any concerted attempt to bring democracy to Iraq, just to keep Saddam in his box.
I don't believe Saddam was considered a real threat, the threats had to be invented to scare the voters.

Towards the end of the Iran/Iraq war I believe everyone realized it was a massive mistake to support Saddam. The support came because the Shah was actually an ally of the west, I believe it was an overzealous response in fears that Iran may have become a close ally to the soviets.

The Kuwait invasion was never given the green light.

About a month and a half ago via karma, I was accused by CC-Marley of actually "sucking up" to you in a thread because I stated that you had the training to handle someone like the Tucson shooter, and a random civilian did not. Yes Posi has been an extremely active poster since he joined like 5 years ago (before me).  Kinda saw him grow up a bit (creepy), and we've had a knock down drag out before.  But that was a while ago and pretty sure we've moved on.  Come to think of it, I've noticed many users/posters either mature or lose the fucking plot.  Not due to this place, but some of my core beliefs have changed to in the last 5 years (some of my posting reflects that).

I dunno whats up with G@lt.  He's fine with by me though.  I enjoy this place (each members quirks) and miss many of the more colorful members that have left/been banned.  Souder summed it up well as he basically said this place dies a little bit everytime someone leaves.  I couldn't agree more. meh.

Taliban was harboring and aiding those responsible for 911. Good enough reason for me.

Diplomacy was tried for ten years to get Saddam to play nice. He refused. So it was not as if he tripped and we blew him up. He had ample chances and warnings to straighten up

Oh glad you asked. It took 10 years of diplomacy to conclude Saddam hadda go. He would not comply with resolutions set forth that stopped the war of 91. in 03, it resumed.
