MICROSOFT has revealed hackers are attempting to steal sensitive data of its Xbox online community after the Sony PlayStation Network was hacked.
The Microsoft problem appeared to be restricted to one game, the popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the US computer giant said.
“Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2,” it said on the XBox Live Status website.
“We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.”

You'd be surprised at the number of sites you're registered to that store all your information as plain text. It's pretty common and you can do nothing about it because you will never know.henno13 wrote:
I've been hearing that they have been storing information as plain text. Plain fucking text. No encryption whatsoever. That's beyond stupid.

No. Most open source projects hash all passwords (because everyone can see how it's coded nobody wants it to be insecure if they want to use it).globefish23 wrote:

I hope my credit card info is securely encrypted at least.

CC info on most sites isn't stored, it's just processed and then validated.
Although hashing passwords isn't particularly safe anymore, all basic hashing methods can be cracked really easily.
Still hackable. All you need is a pretty powerful computer, CUDA and some time and even a SHA-2 (which is just SHA-256, 384 and 512) can be hacked down.HaiBai wrote:

I pretty much accept them and send them directly to Nigeria.globefish23 wrote:

This is true and probably won't ever really get better due to the simple nature that if you keep some data in ANY obscured form and need to it to transform back in a fast, automated fashion, you'll have a single weak point.jsnipy wrote:
Regardless of how 1337 your encryption is, 99% of the it boils down to a key insider. Its pretty sad if the site or any component of the psn were anywhere were in line of site of a physical data store. Bad access control tbh.
