You should be able to spider-proof it by making it a single field hole or make your tunnel to the trap like so:
x = block
o = air
trap
oo
xo
oo
ox
or something like that
EDIT: Doh just place ½field bricks inside the hole and the spiders can't go through.. (I don't know if loot can float through a ½hole

Yeah but it'll always be a full brick up, you can't put it at the top of a brick, ie half a brick from the bottom.

I should have built a trap like that. I dug out a big fuckoff pit under a spawner so they just die when they land.
