oh and the maximum height for buildings is 64 blocks...
If you're looking for resources (iron, coal, etc), always go into existing caves with a stack (stack=64, fyi) or two of torches... a lot less time consuming then trying to stripmine.
oh and if you drop and pickup a tool you're holding the tool's wear (health) resets to new!

I tried dropping my diamond pickaxe and picking it up again, it keeps it's health low...

Stripmining is easy and fast, just have to skip blocks. I dig long, straight, single block width, lines through a hill, 4 blocks high, and keep a two block width to either side. You end up being able to see everything as you go without having to actually dig everything up.

Planting torches around a field will melt the snow.
