Empire and Napoleon were my favorite ones by far.  Napoleon was like a more refined version of Empire but with an acute focus on Europe.

Looking at the store page on Steam for Empire has me really considering playing again.  I always wanted to try to beat the Native American campaign especially but it was hard to figure out how to effectively play as the natives with so much less income and the musket infantry being relatively weak and extremely expensive

Do it while the Steam sale is still going.  Game + all DLC units & campaigns for $7.50 USD

Empire has successfully pulled me back in.  I never realized how much replay value it had.  I'm redoing the whole first three American basic campaigns and it's incredible how much better I am now than when I played it in high school 6 years ago.  Also nice to have a computer powerful enough to max everything out and still get near 60 FPS at all times unless a ship is sploding.

Napoleon is the last one I played properly and is solid, Empire was good but buggy, Napoleon refined it, but at the same time reduced the scale of the game, if Empire played and worked as well as Napoleon it would have been so much better.
I keep wanting to play all of them more, particularly Napoleon seen as I started with the original Shogun, which one of the first online games I played and I managed to be like the 80th best ranked player in the world.
But I heard so many "horror" stories about Rome 2 and Shogun 2 I haven't bothered with them at all.

Richard Holmes did a few good ones his Wellington biography, The Napoleonic Wars and for a broader scope Redcoat: The British Soldier in the Age of Horse and Musket, are "pop" history done well.

So in the last week I put 27.3 hours into MTW2 according to steam. Jinkies that is a lot.

Trying to finish the last Crusades Campaign. Total War is at its best in the late game when everyone has advanced professional units and could put thousands of them into single stacks.

MTW2 was the last of the series on an expansion pack format, right? Looking over at the New total war games, it is intimidating seeing how much DLC you could buy. So much DLC how do I know what I absolutely need?

Doesn't the new total wars limit which civilizations you can play as without DLC?

the dlc tells you which civs you are buying, so you only buy that one. if you want it. And its not so much limiting which civs you can play as, because you never could play as all civs I guess. Its just making more available. Ofcourse they could just make them all available at launch but eh.

I also got attila and napoleon. Attila is a very different game and quite unforgiving.

The Attila prologue was really difficult, I gave up at the part where you have to take back a piece of Rome for yourself after the Rebels take it.  Not terribly inclined to keep playing, I think I'll just wait for the next Total War that has guns in it, which kind of has me wanting to try the Warhammer one that's coming out next month

Started a campaign in Medieval II. Still the best game in the series. Almost hope they don't make a third MTW and ruin this ones legacy.
