I've just been playing around with it quite a bit.  To root is simple, just follow something like this http://uptill1.com/2011/05/12/how-to-ro … alaxy-sii/

I've installed Lite'ning ROM with ninphetamine 2.0.5 kernel, and I literally just switched it to Villain ROM 3.0 with ninphetamine 2.0.5, which I flashed to SiyahKernel v2.0b8 due to battery issues.  I'm told its the best battery/performance ROM/kernel combo out with people having their phones last 3-5 days so I'm excited to see how this turns out.

Its all a relatively simple, though slightly scary, process

You can still pay full price for a phone and join a network.

Hands on video of the Galaxy Nexus
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/18/sams … -hands-on/

New features list of Ice Cream Sandwich and Galaxy Nexus
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/18/andr … -official/

Here's some of the enhancements found in Ice Cream Sandwich:
Option to use virtual buttons in the UI, instead of taking up capacitive touch buttons
Widgets are in a new tab, listed in a similar list to apps
Folders are much easier to create, with a drag-and-drop style similar to iOS
A customizable launcher
New phone app with visual voicemail functionality that lets you speed up or slow down voicemail messages
Pinch-to-zoom functionality in the calendar
Gmail has offline search, a two-line preview, and new action bar at the bottom
Swipe left or right to switch between Gmail conversations
Integrated screenshot capture by holding power and volume down buttons
Improved error correction on the keyboard
Ability to access apps directly from lock screen (similar to HTC Sense 3.x)
Improved copy and paste
Better voice integration
Face Unlock, a facial recognition service
New tabbed web browser, allowing up to 16 tabs
Browser now automatically syncs your Chrome bookmarks
Modern "Roboto" font
Data Usage section in settings lets you set warnings when you reach a certain amount of use and disabling data when you go over your limit
Ability to kill off apps that are using data in the background
Camera app: zero shutter lag, time lapse settings, zoom while recording
Built-in photo editor
New gallery layout, organized by location and person
Refreshed people app with social network integration, status updates and hi-res images
Android Beam, a NFC feature that lets you exchange websites, contact info, directions, YouTube, etc.

It looks bloated .. yea?

*well, I guess if the phone can handle it. I personally prefers basics.. give the user the choice to put photo editing software on there ..etc.

New phone app with visual voicemail functionality that lets you speed up or slow down voicemail messages - I like

Improved error correction on the keyboard - Use SwiftKeyX, fantastic keyboard.

Integrated screenshot capture by holding power and volume down buttons - they already had this, home + power...

I hope the people app will be better now, it was really lacking in a couple of areas.  Though I've honestly never found a phone that did it perfectly

19.5 hours later and 40% left in the battery, this is working well so far.  And the screen is whats using up 65% of the battery so clearly this stuff is doing its job

Just re-rooted my droidx. It was a little bit of a pain since I already had Superuser installed, causing some sort of a conflict. To remove superuser I had to run the adb shell and follow the commands here http://www.psouza4.com/droid3/

I've been using MIUI lately on my Desire. It's nice.

I've been running without Sense for a good few months now and I do miss some of the features, but the custom ones are better in most other ways.

You want one for a hero that isn't hardware hungry?
Good luck.

You can't install most new apps on it and a lot that you can install won't run properly (they run, but with 5 FPS)

I ordered a 4Gs, so i will be out of this thread forever in 4 weeks.
I never regreted my purchase up until the last 2-3 months or so since it worked just fine. But now that i see where android phones are now (and iphones as well) i really fucking hate my phone.

Android (and this phone in particular) isn't for and i found out the hard way and way too late.

just go away, you clearly havent put any effort into improving your phone and simply come here to whine about android.

did you ever even try installing a custom ROM/kernel/modem?

@Camm i'd just try putting CM7 on it

Now that I'm back to being rooted I'd like to try a custom rom. Any suggestions for a Droid X?

When you buy a phone in the 21st century it shouldnt take any moderate amount of tech knowledge to make the thing work properly.
I honeslty wouldnt know why i would want a ROM besides the fact that it could fix the factory flaws (lagging, shit hardware) that should not have been there in the first place.
I'm the type of guy that wouldn't root his droid if he had one that worked fine. Problem is, mine doesn't.

Honestly, i have nothing against android. As an OS it's fine especially if you like to fiddle around with the tech aspect of it like rooting etc. (I don;t)

If you bought a smartphone after the release of the first iphone, especially one that promotes its new easy and smooth to use OS, you can at least expect it to perform its basic function.

There was quite a long period that i couldnt use my phone option (dialing a number and all that fun stuff). I have no idea how long it wasn't working since i make most call using one of those 'favourites' widgets, but it worked after maybe a month or 3 weeks after i first noticed it.
I couldnt call the emergency services or a number that i didnt have saved in my contacts. Do you have any idea how easy that can make you lose faith in you phone/OS?

But don't worry i wont be posting here any more

Well you won't have to worry about widgets with your iphone. .. or customizing at all on ios for that matter.

Because customizing my OS was really what i was looking for in a phone.
