I think it's pretty useful if you suddenly need more money than you can access at that moment.Uzique wrote:

run out of money? savings/family.
easier to pay back... no interest... no fucking credit companies chasing you... no shitty credit ratings
there's really just no need to have a credit card before you work full-time
For example, savings account not accessible by card, you get some massive car trouble.
The only real reason to have one is to build a line of good credit up. That's about it.Uzique wrote:

I have it just in case my Visa card doesn't work for some reason (magnetic strip failing used to be a problem pre chips, also losing it)Uzique wrote:

It's interest-free if you pay it off within a month anyway.

believe it or not, i agree.. i would rather NOT start off my credit score as total shit. My father is completely financially sound because even with his credit card, he only makes purchases he KNOWS he can afford.Uzique wrote:

you don't need a good credit-rating at age 18-21, though. not gonna be buying a 4 bedroom detached house any time soon.
and fair about cards failing... i have 2 current accounts, though, so = 2x debit

Uzi, it's not bad if you pay off the card in full each month. It helps you build up credit (at least in the US, I'm sure it's the same over there) and you don't pay interest on it.
Vendetta, good point. The other day I needed to fuel up my dad's car so I could drive it out to a concert. Well I didn't have much money in my checking account at the time so I just put it on my credit card, and my dad paid me back.

well, I would like an apartment for one or both of my last 2 years of college and especially grad school... and I know I'm not getting one if I racked up $10K worth of debt.Uzique wrote:

i'm not taking out any student loans for next year. it's a either a job or... selling blood and semen
my dad still uses his... he's in VERY good standing with amex though because of his outstanding record. he's cheap as fuck (seriously takes the stereotype to the fullest) but he's one of the smartest people I know when it comes to finances.Uzique wrote:

Sperm banks don't accept semen with aids in it. Same with blood banks.Poseidon wrote:

student loans here are standardized and from a state-sponsored loans company, basically... rather than corporate sharks.

my dad and uncle just ball with straight cash or wire-transfers for all their payments
no credit

i am also going to avoid credit in such a fashion

Putting anything on credit is a losing proposition. Want to own a home? Save up over 5-10 years and pay cash. Why give the banks hundreds of thousands of dollars?

You'd have to save like $30,000 a year to buy a home in either the hood or the sticks around here.JohnG@lt wrote:

poseidon, haibai and rukus comparing fail notes is painful to read

Err, I dont think you listened. A fair amount of my books are brand new editions. And I bought every book of mine but 1 that wasnt a new edition used. Still cost me about $600 instead of $800ish. Its not thaaat big of a differenceUnkleRukus wrote:
Or buying them used, online for a fraction of the cost. I payed 20 bucks for a book that would have cost me 90.
And credit cards are completely necessary here. My debit card has a $200 swipe limit, whereas my credit card has a $1k limit. Want to buy a nice winter jacket? I'd have to walk around with a big wad of cash in my pocket to do so... I never wait to pay it off anyway so I dont see the problem. And building credit is always a plus.

I plan to save about 60-70k a year once I start working full time in January. Between myself and my gf it's easily doable.Hurricane2k9 wrote:

maybe 20,000 if you find a good deal. And that'd be for a 2BR.Hurricane2k9 wrote:
