I always wondered why Fallout 3 was so... small compared to Oblivion.  Not that it was small compared to any other game though.
because they shoveled it out.

And I'll go ahead and agree with you on both points there.

If the combat system for bethesda games was improved, their games would be entirely kickass. I wasn't impressed by the combat of either oblivion or fallout, but the content of oblivion more than made up for it.

Oblivion may not have the best combat, but it's miles above Fallout 3's.

i wish i could get into games like this... but im too much of an fps purist... i find the combat asinine and dull...

oblivion, fallout -- hell even games like mass effect that are more about roleplay/story. i just don't 'get' it.

I'm playing through mass effect 2 again and enjoyed fallout 3. I guess its about the choices and story rather than gameplay.

The only way I see it is I get on average under 10 hours of sp game time on an fps. Mass effect 2 has me at over 50 hours on sp, about 49 hours I enjoyed.

The fact that your choices from a game from 2007 could impact your gameplay from a game from 2010 was pretty fucking cool.

I really hope NV is more choice/moral based.

I was more impressed to hear that mass effect was the first game to do that.

Definitely buy the GOTY. So worth the money. I know Miggle will tear me apart on TS for this, but I spent a good 100 hours on Fallout 3. 40 alone on the DLC.

as i said, though... the combat system just doesn't draw me in. there had better be some amazing storylines and a really compelling gameplay-experience to compensate for the utter-wank that is the F3 aiming-system / combat interaction. at the moment im struggling STALKER because there's no voice-acting, the writing is absolutely terrible and so none of the 'content' of the game really makes up for the pretty piss-poor shooting. plus the graphics are shit as well. disappointed with that one.

mass effect was an easier choice to buy because it's 3rd person and reminds me a bit of dead-space in terms of movement and gameplay. i can get along with that: it's not pretending to be a 'proper' shooter or 'action rpg' as such, so i'm not going to get bitched out at the lack of a brilliant top-notch combat system. fallout 3 and stalker's systems look pretty dire.

Fallout 3's combat is one of the worst in any game I've ever played.

whenever ive watched friends play it, it pretty much came across as a:

LOOK! HERE'S 100 DIFFERENT TYPES OF GIMMICK-DRIVEN WEAPONS - CLICK WHICH PART OF THE ENEMIES BODY YOU WANT TO SEE EXPLODING IN THE ANIMATION AND THEN LAUGH AT THE GUN'S 'FUNNY' FIRING!

over and over and over and over...

i'd rather play pokemon or final fantasy and run around in the long-grass all day

It's just "entertaining" I guess you could say. The atmosphere is what drew me in mostly, as with Red Dead Redemption.

Gameplay wise it's very soft, I'll admit.

Or if you want to try something radically different try Jagged Alliance 2.  If you do play the game, get ready for ragequiting in both vanilla and 1.13 of Jagged Alliance 2.  The game is still fun though and there's cheats for the game.

So do you have to play the expansion packs to understand the storyline in this game?

Fallout doesn't really have a linear story except it's the apocalpytic wasteland, people are trying to survive, evil government before the war wants to regain control etc.
