How do you build up self-confidence in a sport?  Specifically, goalkeeping in soccer?  I'm the best goalkeeper on my club during practice, but during games I suck dick because I'm just not confident.

Sadly I'm not good at all when it comes to soccer ... but if I was, I guess when it came to game time, I'd just keep telling myself that.  When you start doubting your ability, then the confidence drops.  Dunno if that helps, but that's what I used to do when I was in track.  Just kept reminding myself of all my practice and my ability.

Tell yourself you're the motherfucking best. If you let a ball pass, man up, analyse your mistakes and learn from them. Remember you're the most important part of your team, and you should be building the confidence in the defensive side too.

In short, be more confident of your capabilities, don't doubt yourself and keep going for it (+learn from your mistakes)

Do you teammates give their best in the practice against you as the goalie?
If the answer is yes then I would tend to think that the opposite team will also give their best.
Form there there not much change.

Or your teammates suck more than you and then you know you will face the opponent alone.

1st - Keep working hard.
Not more but focus more on what you have to do, check all aspect of your play and learn from yourself.

2nd - Stabilize you mental.
Do not just look at you, compare what you do to other goalies and see that you are not that bad.  How you approach a game may be where you need to verify stuff.  What if you were the best?  In which state of mind would you come to the game?  You must be good at something at home or in class or at work.  How are you in there?  Pick elements from there and you will see that almost all the time, the change that has to be made is in your perceptions.  Think about it, as apprehension of what ever type.  I use F.E.A.R. as False Evidence Appearing Real a lot.  (I'm not saying that you are scared but just to image perceptions.)  You're not bad, you just conceptualize something in a wrong manner.  It just in game man.  You see in practice you're good and from there it only mean that it's in your head buddy.  It's the way you see it.  Change that and everything should fit into place.

3rd -  Keep yourself at it, again.
Yes more work, dedication, focus and results will come.

that should help

but if it doesn't then practice practice and practice ....... set up a camera to video yourself at practice so you can work on your form so you get better

when you see yourself getting better then self confidence rises

You need to start listening to Judas Priest before the games. That shit will pump you up.

Perhaps you worry because you don't wanna let your team down. Tell them how you feel and when they reply with "Don't worry babez you can only do your best we're all here for the love of the sport and have fun" then you will chillax.

Stop thinking too much, especially regarding your opponents, and just play your game.

Or if you are going to think about them, do it in the manner of "who the fuck are these bitches"

Once you start putting in the good match performances it'll all just be normal to you afterwards, but confidence and playing under pressure is what sports is all about. Just realise it as a fundamental aspect of the game and that should help you work towards overcoming your fears.

@Everyone, thanks for all the replies.  I guess the main reason is that I was afraid of letting my teammates down.  I joined a travel team and I was really intimidated.

And @jord, we already did that lelz.  Didn't work.

I really don't think you can.

I'm sure one of your teammates will help you out in that department.

Yeah we do sometimes but it would be a lot better if I could just do it myself.

All those machines and shit are so expensive.

I used to listen to White Zombie before floorball practise. I started repeating a mean riff or a part of some song and it got me focused on the game itself. I shut out disturbing things quite well around me. Just focused on the ball. We had 1,5h practises and once I managed to keep my goal intact until the last 10min of practise. Did some awesome saves back then. Sucks that my knees can't take goaltending anymore

Yeah, that's the main problem.  America.  Whenever I went to Poland for vacation, I had no problem finding someone.  But here, no one really plays it except for the kids on my team.  And we all don't live that close to each other and etc.

Find something that uses the same basic skills. Hand eye co-ordination, agility and reflexes. Beach volleyball comes to mind, but again its not a solo activity.

Edit: Also I'm having a serious case of deja-vu, did you make exactly the same thread and get exactly the same replies about year ago, or am I just going crazy.

No, I think I asked if there was a machine that shot soccer balls at me.
