I'd like to propose the motion that action film actors, pro-wrestlers and rock stars be barred from politics.

All those in favour?

to be honest, I think abbott is doing a fairly good job as opposition leader. hitting the right buttons and making the right statements. not done anything really silly/outlandish yet.

He has the luxury of being in opposition. He hasnt bought that much to the table policy wise. He just opposes. His Carbon reduction policy is pointless, but may appear less scary, so people may believe it. I cant really think of any other alternative policies he has bought up. Its just opposition for the sake of opposition. If you want the liberal party to be the Oz version of the Republican party, by all means vote for him. He has made minor stuff ups, but nothing really major yet.
Having said that, the labor propaganda machine has enough of his sound bites to make him sound pretty bad for the next election. It wont be an easy election for him.

I even heard some talk that Turnbull could start his own party. He has denied this, but an extra moderate party wouldnt be a bad thing.

Would that take more votes from Labour or the Libs?
Not that I'm sure I care as they all seem rubbish.

I'll be voting Independent or Green wherever possible, or consume a carton of beer and take the 'how to vote' card from the prettiest girl, not sure yet - think I'll decide on the day.

He'll start mentioning policy as the election campaign ramps up.

If you actually put forward good policies without an election in the very near future, the govt will just steal the better parts for itself. The whole point of opposition is to oppose.

That is only partly true. An opposition should oppose, but they must also put themselves across as an alternative govt. You dont do that by opposing all the time. You need some policies, or you arent an alternative.

Classic example of that is NSW Liberals. They do nothing but oppose, offer no real alternative and the Labor party can be monstrous fuck ups and still get re-elected.

Labor split as Kate Lundy proposes changes to net filter

The Australian wrote:

A SPLIT has emerged in Labor ranks over Communications Minister Stephen Conroy's filter plan to limit internet porn after a backbencher confirmed she would seek to amend the legislation.
Labor Senator Kate Lundy plans to propose a filter “opt out” when the legislation goes before caucus.

“I think there's a lot of interest in my proposal,” she told The Australian.

“The feedback I'm getting back from colleagues is that there are concerns around freedom of speech and lack of parental empowerment.”

Senator Lundy said the Conroy filter took control away from parents.

“It doesn't empower parents with the control over what their children are getting,” she said. “Senator Conroy's policy just puts in place a blanket filter.”

Senator Lundy's proposal will allow web surfers to set the filter at a level they consider appropriate for their household.

Under her proposal, the Refused Classification-based filter would apply if an internet user had not made their own choice.

Senator Lundy's views on the filter are well known within the caucus and she is confident there is “a lot of interest” in her opt-out mechanism, known as the “mandatory option”.
Looks like its still up for negotiation. This wont change the fact that it will slow the net down I guess.

CHRIS UHLMANN: And finally, for two days, Nicola Roxon has been taunting the Opposition with several thousand golf balls with "doctor vacancy" printed on them.

It's a marketing toy produced under the previous government to apparently help plug workforce shortages.

Today, she noted her opposite number was a golf fan and that led to this:

NICOLA ROXON: I am prepared to offer him some balls if he wants some...

(Laughter)

However, I am...

CHRIS UHLMANN: And that's a hard act to follow.
I saw that. "Laughter" is a wild understatement.
