Dogs.

You can't have "dogs vs. cats" and then have an "other" option
I prefer dogs. They are nice and friendly and care for you as much as you care for them. Cats are annoying attention whores that want nothing to do with you unless you're feeding them or petting them.

Dogs
Why? Because cats are spoiled useless beings. They sit around and sleep all day and when they want to, they'll come to you so you can have the pleasure of petting them. Yep they certainly don't help you in any way other than they like to catch mice sometimes.
Dogs on the other hand, we'll fetch things for you, walk around with you, play with you. The only thing that's annoying is when they beg for food, which won't happen if they're trained.
Oh and cats stink.

Cats... i have two.
Both have their pluses and minuses, but for a companion I'd have to say a dog. For something pretty to look at, a cat is better.
Dogs are much more diverse, and you can have pretty much a Cog, or a Dat, which is what Molly is. All the companionship of a dog, all the sit about being lazy of a cat.
I'd love to have a big German Shepard or a Husky for walking, and a nice little kitteh for stroking whilst watching the TV.
