Due to the nature in which Russians are portrayed in Modern Warfare 2, the country has banned the sale of the game and have begun to recall all copies that were already sold.
The most complained about part of the game centers around a group of terrorists shooting civilians inside a Russian airport.
This isn't the first time a country has taken issue with how their homeland was portrayed in a game. Another recent example is when the Venezuelan government took issue with Mercenaries 2 or when the North Korean government took issue with Ghost Recon 2.
I like this reply:

Ha ha, If North Korea only had a computer powerful enough to play Crysis on.
I think this whole thing is ridiculous. There are hundreds of games depicting USA vs Russia and this one is the only one to get banned. What about Operation Flashpoint? Or many other games!

Agreed. I wish Russia wouldn't be such a dick.

I think investing in sending copies to Russia for high prices would be a good idea. I like the way you think Bearmode Seremaker.

I find this kinda funny considering that there is a picture floating around of Vladimir Putin posing with a Red Alert 3 box.

It isn't banned, I've bought it at the day of world's release, 10th of November.

Ha! You can buy a license since the first day for 500 rubles here (499 actually), what is around 17$.
But they locked the airport level, so you can only play it if you change language in Steam. So did I, because the Russian localization is terrible.
Funny thing is that in "cropped" Russian version, Russia attacks USA for no reason

Oh, and as the first one, this game provoked a huge patriotic shitstorm in the forums. In every thread you can see 2-3 raging posts by some little assholes))

I think what the best way of censorship was in German version - mission fails if you shoot civilians. As I said, in our version the whole plot became even more stupid without that level.

Well they are right about the "Terminal mission" part. It was completely unnecessary and dull anyway.

That mission really amped me up. I didn't really feel any guilt or anything (it's a goddamn videogame), but it did make me feel like I was a badass badguy in an action movie, just casually walking through a place gunning down civilians and taking out any armed response instantly. I also like how Makarov just casually holds the gun off to the side and fires away without even glancing over. And the music during that scene added immensely to the effect as well.

a bit too casual, it would have been nice if I could walk more than 2 feet a minute. It got really dull.

Ok, maybe the indoor part dragged on just a little too long because of the walking speed. But it only emphasized the contrast between casually walking through and the "Oh shit ok let's take cover from the SWAT team and start using a little bit of tactics". On a second playthrough of the mission, I imagine I'd get bored pretty quickly though.

Speaking of which, does anyone understand why he says "No Russian?" However, I think you're quite wrong, Mr. Mek. The news agencies and politicians would all flip a shit, but the average person doesn't give a shit.

because he wants to remind them not to use russian. Hence, no russian.

A big thing is the civilian-airport scene. The fact that your enemies are often presumably Russian hasn't really caused a problem. There was no problem with CoD 4. Think if there was a world-famous russian-made game in which you are part of a U.S. organization and end up shooting innocent civilians in a U.S. airport. Or whatever country you're from.

At first I thought it meant what Reaps said. But I'm glad the others pointed out what it really meant.

I should start paying attention when I play. I got too giddy with excitement when I found out I was gonna massacre unarmed civilians
